Story of the Season

After a good pre-season the Buds went into the campaign in confident mood. Although losing one or two players, we recruited Jace Williams from Clydach Wasps also gaining Carl Thorne and Ryan Bennett from Treowen. This was also the first season that the Buds Reserves entered the Welsh Reserve League attracting a few young players who would end up playing a part in the First Team towards the end of the season. The Buds opening game was against the team who was going to win the league, Pentwyn Dynamos who took the points back to Cardiff followed by games against Abertillery where we enjoyed success taking the six points during mid week games. Travelling down to Porthcawl, we slumped and although playing well against Ton Pentre in the Welsh Cup and narrowly losing to Caldicot in the League Cup, the tone was setwhere by the Buds could only muster ten points from their first twelve league games with an embarresing defeat to local rivals Risca in what was a 6-1 rout at home which was the lowest part of the season thus far. The Buds continued to keep their Senior Cup ambitions alive with wins over Abertillery and Monmouth but couldnt recipicate these wins for points in the league. Off the pitch, we received tragic news with the loss of Martin Dwyers partner Alison who supported the Club attending the many events the Club hold. After Christmas, the team through the January transfer window signed Chris Duggan who was to have a major part to play in the upturn in the Buds season. Also coming into the Buds team were centre halfs, Wayne Edwards and Jason Brewer and these players along with the up turn in form from the squad of players transformed the Buds season. At the beginning of the year,we travelled down to Ystradgynlais thumping them 4-1 the same time Cardiff City started their FA Cup run by beating Chasetown in what was their catalyst to fire them on to success. The Buds out of the next twenty games won fourteen, drew three and losing only three games in what was promotion form. Saddly games run out and we missed out by an agonising eight points. During this run we played Cwmbran celtic in the Semi final of the Senior Cup at Cwmbran Stadium narrowly losing 2-1 after extra time in a game that could have gone either way. The season also saw the Buds give debuts to Liam Vaughn,Dafydd Brewer, Ben Williams, Joel Powell, Nathan Speller, Tom Rose, Craig Morgan in goals, and Darryl King which is very encouraging for the future of the Club in its targets set for the next couple of seasons. All in all, a good season which could have been so much more but many positives to be taken from it and take into next season.
