Alveston 6-a-side 2007 - Winners
16 Jun 2007

Squad: Jack Hockin, Luke Tailby, Connor Grainger, Nathan Griffiths, Matthew Wingrove, Ben Matthews, Danny Rice, Danny Gardner.

The boys travelled to Alveston to find they were the only team from outside division one. After a disappointing opening game against Balsall, the boys remained unbeaten to qualify as runners up for the semi finals. The semi final paired them with hosts and strong favourites Alveston. The game was end to end and very evenly matched and it was no surprise when the whistle went at the end of normal time with the score still 0-0. Extra time. Admirals took the lead through an early strike by Matthew Wingrove. To be fair it was then pretty much backs to the walls stuff as the boys hung on to reach the final.

In the final Admirals now had the opportunity to gain revenge for the opening defeat against the group winners Balsall. Balsall started on top with Luke Tailby & Connor Grainger defending for their lives. Nathan Griffiths & Ben Matthews started to win the midfield battle and a fine move required a great save from Danny Gardner's first time effort. Full time and it was still 0-0. In extra time Matthew Wingrove wove through the Balsall defence and laid the ball back to Danny Rice, who rolled the ball just past the post. Full time 0-0 Penalties here we come.

Hope's were high after the previous year's success in Great Yarmouth. This time round nerves started to show with both sides missing penalties and plenty of tears being shed each time Balsall had a chance to win. Eventually it was down to the keepers with Jack Hockin hitting his low into the corner, Jack then stood tall as the Alveston keeper blasted over the bar. Admirals had won another tournament on penalties.

ADMIRALS U10’S WIN R&T GREAT YARMOUTH TOURNAMENT

Admirals travelled to Gt Yarmouth this weekend to compete with teams from Corby, Essex, Linclon and North London.

The squad for the tournament; Jack Hockin, Luke Tailby, Connor Grainger, Nathan Griffiths, Matthew Wingrove, Danny Rice, Danny Gardner & Thomas Lowe

Day one’s opening game was against Greenbanks where a brace from Danny Gardner was enough to secure a 2-1 victory. The second game against Woodford D saw Danny Rice cause havoc in the Woodford defence as goals by Ben Matthews and Nathan Griffiths secured another 2-1 win. The last game on Saturday saw Admirals take on Woodford B where Luke Tailby and Connor Grainger were in phenomenal form in defence. Danny G opened the scoring with keeper Jack Hockin scoring the second, when his goal kick cleared everybody including the Woodford keeper for a 2-0 win.

Day 2 started with Corby Warriors where the hard working Matthew Wingrove scored a solo goal after 2mins to ensure Admirals remained unbeaten 1-0. Admirals now required a point against Winchmore Hill to reach the final and with 5mins gone found themselves 1-0 down, on the stroke of half time Danny G rose majestically to nod home the equaliser. Thomas Lowe then maintained a water tight defence to see Admirals through to the final.

The final saw Admirals take on Woodford C, the game was end to end with Luke Tailby battling well in defence. Admirals nearly took the lead when Matty Wingrove
played in Ben Matthews who shot just wide. Woodford then took the lead with a snap shot minutes later Danny G was on hand to lob the keeper for the equaliser. The second half saw Admirals start to have more of the ball with Danny Rice and Thomas Lowe both going close in normal time. Extra time was nerve racking for everyone especially when Nathan Griffiths teed up Connor Grainger, who unfortunately hit the ball so sweetly the ref never realised it had hit the back stanchion and rebounded into play. So to penalties where Nathan Griffiths scored Admirals first and Jack the cat saved Woodfords first. Connor Grainger then scored to set up Jack to be the hero when he dived to his left to save the second Woodford penalty. The whole Admirals party went crazy as they realised Admirals U10’S had won their first trophy.

The weekend was rounded off when the players were presented with the trophy and their medals by Sir Geoff Hurst. Well done boys to say Griff and I are PROUD of you all is an understatement.
