AFC Clayton - Formed 2004
15 Jul 2006

AFC Clayton were formed in 2004 by Chris Brown. Steve Bailey was appointed coach. After 2 heavy defeats the players decided to advertise on The Oatcake fanzine website for an experienced coach/manager.
Ian Sumnall applied and was appointed team manager in Sep 2004.
The heavy defeats comtinued as the long process of organising the club began. By November the scores were coming down and the team acheieved their first and only) point of the season with a 3-3 draw with Talke Tigers. The team finished bottom with that solitary point but a start had been made and the players were beginning to gel.

2005/2006 season

The start of pre season saw Sumnall make many changes and not just on the playing staff. Parents of 2 players were persuaded to get involved with the club. John Birch and Andy Parker became Chairman and Vice Chairman respectively. Sumnall took over as secretary with girlfriend Tracie Wylie taking over as Treasurer.
On the playing side, no fewer than 7 players were released and the new signings were Josh Woodall, Sam Durber, Phil Sutton, James Lawrence, Jake Barrat and Chris Whitfield. Re-joining the club were Grant Stubbs and Danny Millward.
Pre Season results were steady if unspectacular and we took our place in The County Minor Youth League Division 2.
An opening day win of 6-1 was welcome and when that was followed up with 2 more wins in the next 3 games we sat proudly on top of the table.
Injuries and loss of form combined to see us struggle more through the winter and we eventually finished next to bottom of a tight division. We actually lost 6 games by 3-2.
The high point of the clubs short history came in May 2006 when we lifted the Subsidiary Cup at Stone Dominoes ground. A hard fought 2-1 win over Cheadle United a just reward for 2 seasons of hard work by all concerned!!
