AFC DARWEN 2 COLNE 1
Darwen entertained Premier League Colne and recorded a good victory.
Defences dominated for the first twenty minutes or so, with neither side able to produce a worthy shot on goal, but on twenty five minutes Darwen were awarded a free kick for a heavy Colne tackle near the right corner flag. Karl Turner floated in the kick, which was headed on, finding the feet of Jon Leeming, who controlled the ball, side stepped a defender, and fired a shot into the top corner.
Ten minutes later, a throw-in from the halfway line was taken by Steve Lee who slipped a defence splitting pass to Karl Turner. His run into the box was halted by a trip, and the referee pointed to the spot. Karl Turner took the penalty kick, but his well struck shot was a put too near the keeper, who managed to push the ball away for a corner.
Half Time: AFC Darwen 1 Colne 0
Darwen doubled their lead five minutes into the second half. After some Colne pressure, Lee Turner, who had come back to help the defence, cleared the ball upfield. This was latched onto by Bobby Langford, who outpaced his defender and rounded the Colne keeper to slot the ball home.
The visitors pulled a goal back seven minutes later when Gary Brown was adjudged to have fouled a Colne forward in the box. Neil Stansfield confidently despatched the penalty.
The home side were then reduced to ten men, as Jon Leeming was red carded for raising his arm.
With a quarter of the game to go, a Colne cross into the area was tipped away off a forward’s head by Darwen keeper Matt Pilkington.
