Town 1st Team
Kempston Town was set up in 1989 as there were a number of ex-Kempston Colts players who were no longer actively playing football but wished to do so. A meeting was arranged at the King William Public House in the spring of 1989 and the club was formed shortly after.
The ideals of the club were to encourage younger existing Colts players to continue their footballing “career” in an environment that was similar to that which they had played at youth level. So close were the links that, in that first season, it had the same chairman and secretary as Kempston Colts and part of the club’s constitution stated that only ex-colts players were allowed to play for Town.
With sole access to Cryselco Sports Ground on Saturday afternoon’s we also had a home ground that we could virtually call our own. Known as the “postage stamp” to many visiting teams (due to it’s infamous lack of width) in the early days the pitch could be used to an advantage as many a team were psychologically undone before they even pulled on a shirt!
Entered into the Beds and District league in Division 5 (of six, 1-5 and Premier) the club enjoyed rip roaring success being promoted to Division 1 within five years!
As the club endeavored to be promoted to the Premier division the Colts rule was removed from the constitution in 1997 and this allowed an influx of “foreign” – well non-Colts players – to join the club! Cryselco remained the club’s home ground until the year 2000 when it was decided to join the Colts in a move to use the facilities at Kempston Rovers, Hillgrounds Road ground.
The club enjoyed promotion to the Premier division in its first season as tenants at Hillgrounds and with the club achieving its highest ever league position last season it now looks forward to more success in the future.
