Albert Tavern completed the league and cup double to climax a fantastic first season in the league. They beat a good Prince Consort side to add the Burgess Cup to the second division they had won the previous Saturday by winning all eighteen league games. The only game they lost was a 5-3 reverse to first division MK United.
The Cup Final kicked off with Albert Tavern camped in Prince Consort's half for the opening ten minutes creating half chances with Ross Charlton prominent ? firstly playing in Robert Ripkey who was foiled by brave goal keeping from Wayne Dowler and then the keeper was out smartly to deny Charlton himself. Consort managed to break out and won a corner that saw Dan Humphreys stretching just to much to keep his header down. On 17 minutes Ross Charlton beat a poor offside trap and rounded Dowler only to see midfielder Kai Lake back to clear the danger. Consort were gradually working their way into the game with Lake prompting from midfield and the lively Jamie Miller always a danger with his pace. It was Miller who set up a shooting chance for Lake but his effort was comfortable saved.
Mark Jarvis and Lyndon Haylett worked the ball down the flank for Miller to shoot just wide. Albert Tavern were getting bogged down continually trying to go down the centre where Consort's strength lay in Lake , Henry Moore and Humphreys. Four minutes before the break Albert Tavern made the break through from an unlikely source. It was full back Wes Parker whose header from a free kick diverted the ball beyond Dowler and into the net.
The second half opened brightly with Miller playing a clever ball to strike partner Darren Devlin but his effort was off target. Ross Charlton was again prompting at the other end and when the ball broke to the league's leading scorer Daniel Charlton it seemed inevitable that it would become 2-0 but he blazed over. Twelve minutes into the second period Parker was instrumental in doubling the lead when his intelligent through ball found player manager Daniel Charlton and this time he made no mistake. Consort continued to press with Lake 's free kick well saved by John Locke. Moore was wide after good work again by Miller. As Consort pressed Albert tavern tried to exploit space left at the back with Paul Charlton playing in Ross Charlton who shot just over. Another Lake free kick caused danger in the Albert tavern penalty area when Devlin flicked on but a finishing touch was missing. An excellent four man move opened up Consort but Ripkey dragged his shot wide. With just under fifteen minutes remaining Albert tavern made the game safe when Paul Charlton's close control played in Scott Charlton whose pass found Daniel Charlton with too much space in the penalty area and he left Dowler with no chance.
