A Brief Overview of the last 30 years
24th August 2002 saw the club celebrate 70 years of football. In 1985 the club won the Amos Cup. In those days we used the now closed “Rose & Crown” pub on the main road. Things changed with that cup victory and in 1986/87 we joined the Essex & Suffolk Border League which in turn brought more success for the club.
In the first season in the Border League we won the Third Division title and promotion to the Second Division.
The next season, 1987/88, we had another successful campaign resulting in the first Xl being runners up to old rivals Gas Recreation and progressing to the First Division of the Border League.
During season 1988/89 it became a settling in period in the First Division and we finished in mid-table.
The 1989/90 season saw the club climb to even greater heights. The first team won the First Division title but were denied promotion to the Premier Division due to the facilities at Ford Lane not being up to the standard required by the Border League.
In 1990/91 the club won the First Division Championship again. The Committee were all on tender hooks hoping that the new upgraded facilities would meet the Border League requirements – and this time around they did. So Alresford Colne Rangers at long last had made it to the Premiership of the Border League.
Our first game of the 1991/92 season at home was against Dedham Old Boys and the Referee that day was Tony ‘Doc’ Springett, who remarked what superb facilities we had at Ford Lane
We managed to win enough games to stay in the Premier Division and during the 1992/93 season we narrowly missed out on the title and finished Runners Up. We also won the Border League Cup during that season.
The club enjoyed a purple patch of cup successes throughout the nineties with pride of place going to the second team who won The Reserve Knockout Cup in 1994/1995 and again in 2002/03. The first team won the A.V.Lee Memorial Trophy in 1993/1994 and again in 1996/1997. We also won the Tommy Thompson Cup in 1996/1997.
The club just missed out on securing the Border League Cup & Essex Intermediate Cup in season 1995/1996 finishing proud Runners Up.
And finally in 2002/03 the first team won the Essex & Suffolk Border League First Division to once again join what is now regarded by many as the elite league for village clubs in the two counties.
