Club History
26 Jul 2010

Amesbury is a small Town in Wiltshire approximately nine miles north of Salisbury, very close to the A303 and Stonehenge. Amesbury Town Football Club was founded in 1904 and first played its football in a field near the historic monument of Stonehenge, although legend purporting they didn’t need to bring along their own goalposts is unfounded!
Town played local football in the Salisbury League until progressing to County football in the late 50s. In the early years the club went under various guises, Amesbury, Amesbury Comrades (after WWI) and Amesbury Corinthians. The years between the wars were not a glorious time for the club, it's only success being champions of the Salisbury & District Wednesday League in 1935/36. It was not until the late 1950s however that Town started to gain County honours, winning the Wiltshire League Division 1 title, Hospital Cup in 1959/60 and also the Wiltshire Subsidiary Cup in 1960/61.
It was many seasons later that further success came to the Town, winning the Wiltshire Combination League in 1975/76 and lifting the Wiltshire County title for the first time in 1979/80 and the Wilts Senior Cup in 1983/84.
In the late 1980’s and early 90’s the club enjoyed its most successful period, winning the Wiltshire County title twice and finishing Runners up on three occasions, as well as lifting the Wiltshire Senior Cup in 1993/94 for the second time.
Progression was made to the Western League First Division for three seasons from the 1994/95 season. The first season was fairly successful, but the following two saw the club struggle and for 1997/98 season the club dropped down to the Salisbury & District League.
The Towns commitment to youth over the years saw them continue to run an under 18 side in the Wiltshire County FA Youth Floodlight League.
For the 1998/99 season, Amesbury went in a different direction and ran the first team in the Division 3 of the Hampshire League and re introduced a Reserve side in the Salisbury League. The Club’s first season in Hampshire was fairly successful, finishing 4th and winning the Wiltshire Junior Cup.
The 1999/2000 season saw Amesbury meet the criteria to gain entry into the newly formed Hampshire League Premier Division, with the Reserve side in the Hampshire League Combination. The season proved to be one of the most memorable in the clubs history, winning the Premier Division title in its inaugural season.
The 2000/01 season was not as successful as the club would have liked, failing to regain the Championship title of last season, eventually finishing in 12th position. The Youth team did however reach the Wiltshire County FA Youth Floodlight League final.
The following season, the Club finished second from bottom and were saved from relegation due to clubs not having the necessary ground standards required for promotion.
The next two seasons were better as finished in 11th and then 8th place in the league.
The commencement of the 2004/05 season saw a number of improvements made at the Recreation Ground as the team competed in the Wessex league for the first time. There was a change off the field when Manager Nick Horner resigned at the beginning of March and senior players Steve Reeves and Neil Sole remained as temporary managers until the end of the season. There was a good run in the league cup before a defeat to VT FC on penalties. One of the highlights of the year was two fixtures to celebrate the Clubs Centenary. The first team entertained a strong Salisbury City side whilst the Reserves played against an Amesbury Old Boys team.
For season 2005/06 the Club appointed a new management team of John Scott, Pete Taylor and Gareth Dilling. The team, which included a number of locally based youngsters, made a reasonable start to the season but were inconsistent, with relegation just avoided.
The 2006/07 season proved to be a successful one in terms of FA Vase success. Victories over Combined Counties Premier League side Cove and Thame United (Hellenic Premier League) earned them the prestigious FA Vase Team of the Round Award. However, Manager John Scott resigned in November and was replaced first by Tony Craven and shortly by former manager Glen Butterfield. A re-organisation of the league saw the Club escape relegation.
The Recreation Ground was renamed Bonnymead Park by the local council in July 2007. The season proved to be more successful than the previous two with the 1st team finishing 11th of 21 teams in the Sydenhams Wessex League Division One, The side scored an amazing 100 league goals (though conceded 85) with Nic Turpin winning the League's Golden Boot Award. He scored 46 goals in total and equalled the Club record of 7 hat tricks during the season. The undoubted success of the season were the U-13s who won the Mid Wilts Youth League with a 100% record and runners-up in the League Cup Final.
Another mid-table finish for 2008/09 saw Nic Turpin again close in on the club's record for goals in a season and came agonisingly close with a total of 51. A debut in the FA Cup for the club ended in defeat at New Milton Town. The season ended with a thrilling Hospital Cup Semi Final against Downton but heartbreak for the Blues losing in extra time. Manager Glen Butterfield left the club along with prolific scorer Nic Turpin.
2009/10 A sad end to the season with the death of 'Mr Amesbury' Tony Hinchliffe which overshadowed everything. It was the first season back with Nick Horner back in charge and saw Amesbury finish 11th in what was an entertaining season with some good youngsters coming through to give hope for the future. 2010/11 started poorly and Nick Horner was force to step down due to ill health. Mitch Blake had a short spell in charge but it was under guidance of Ian Jones that the team picked up around Christmas and again some good youngsters came through and the team ended the season comfortably mid-table.
