Appley Bridge Football Club was formed officially in 1908, but played local football before the turn of the last century.
The club has progressed over the years playing in several locations around the village before settling at its present ground in the sixties.
The club has won several major cups and a number of respected divisions throughout its history; notably the Wigan Cup in 1952 and 2009; and the Guildhal Cup in 1994. The club's first team are currently in the Preston & Distrtict Football League and have maintained a place in the Premier Division for the past 30 years.
The club achieved Football Charter Standard Status five seasons ago by encouraging local community youngsters to join the club and they have now progressed from Under 8's to Under 18's, a total of nine junior teams.
This hard work was carried out by the volunteers who manage those teams and last season the club was successful in being awarded F.A. Charter Development Standard statuts, one of only two in West Lancashire. This was supported by many local business's with sponsorship deals for all Team's Kits and Training wear. The Senior team are currently sponsored by local busiiness man J.W.Gaskell.
This season 1908-09 saw the club in it's centenary season and a grand event took place in June 2009 to commemerate this achievement.
