Charter Standard / Volunteer Awards
06 Dec 2006

Suffolk FA paid tribute to some of football's most valued, if not most recognised, individuals recently at the Charter Standard / Volunteer Awards Evening at the end of November.

Administrator: Harry Steed (Bacton 89)

As Development Officer for Bacton United Football Club since the club’s inception 1989, Harry Steed’s role has been fundamental in maintaining ongoing growth and expansion of a rural village-based football club. Recognising from the very earliest days, the need to provide continuity for adult football club by nurturing and developing youth teams, Harry has overseen the ongoing growth in the numbers of youth boys teams and the introduction of new girls football teams through the development of excellent coaching links with local schools. Throughout the nineties and up to the present day, numbers of young players have continued to increase – but these players were – and, for the time being, still are, playing at sub standard facilities scattered across several different locations in the village and surrounding area. The village hall, local primary school, and a separate recreation ground are all used, teams are sharing pitches and changing facilities are woefully inadequate.

While that story is not uncommon in local football, Harry Steed has set an example in how to do something about it. While driving the club forward to achieve all the requirements to gain Charter Standard status in November 2003 as well as gaining his own coaching badges, Harry was also busy negotiating the purchase of land to form a new six acre home site for the club. Harry has led a small team of people at the club who have dedicated countless hours putting together relevant business plans and football development plans to support the project as well as working tirelessly to raise funds locally to support a grant from the Football Foundation. That grant was awarded in June of this year. It gives Bacton United the green light to move on to another stage as a club and it’s fair to say that probably wouldn’t have happened without Harry’s dedication to the cause.

Both senior and youth players will, finally, have a permanent base.
