60's (25/08/08)

Season 1960 – 61

Park United 3 Bancffosfelen 4

Team – M Jones, A Emmanuel, D Griffiths, A Rees, H Emmanuel, D Lewis, T Lloyd, H Jones, L Davies, G Emmanuel, N Gibbard
A substitute referee had to take control of the match and when he allowed the fourth Banc goal, Park Utd had enough and trooped off the field, leaving the game to be abandoned with 13 minutes to go.
Season 1962 – 63

Bancffosfelen 0 Porthyrhyd 2

Both teams were without some key players for their local derby played in very unpleasant conditions with persistent rain throughout the game. Although play was fairly even Porthyrhyd managed to establish a 2 - 0 lead through goals by David Phillips and Barry John. ( * later to become “The King” of Welsh Rugby )
The second half saw Porthyrhyd having the edge but they failed to increase their lead due mainly to the good work of Banc keeper, Eirwyn Edwards and centre half Huw Emmanuel.

Season 1964 - 65

Mond Cup - Semi Final - Porthyrhyd 4 Bancffosfelen 2

Holders Porthyrhyd gained their place in the final following a ding-dong battle against local rivals Bancffosfelen. Banc had a large proportion of teenagers in their team, and they have done extremely well this season, and if they carry on this way then promotion must surely not be far away. However the greater experience and some element of luck saw Porthyrhyd gain a deserved victory. Porth drew first blood when outside left Kenny Goldsmith scored, and Banc keeper Alan Rowlands had to be at his best to prevent Charlie Evans increasing the lead. Banc equalised when Derrick Lewis broke through, drew the keeper and squared for outside left Esmor John to hammer home.
Back came Porth when Charlie Evans took on the Banc defence and scored a brilliant individual goal. Shortly after the outstanding Kenny Goldsmith crossed for centre forward Raymond Williams to increase Porth’s lead. Porthyrhyd then sealed their victory through a long range Ian Kent effort.
Not to be outdone Banc fought to the end and were rewarded through Derrick Lewis, who despite carrying an injury managed to punish the Porth defence.

WHICH TEAM GOES UP TO DIVISION ONE ?

The soccer season is over but the fight goes on as to who will be promoted from Division Two of the Carmarthenshire League.
By right the top two teams are promoted, but an F A of Wales rule states that no two teams from one club shall play in the same division. Carmarthen Town Reserves are undisputed champions with Evans & Williams as runners up. Evans & Williams’ first team already play in the first division, so this could stop them getting promoted.
A Carmarthenshire League spokesman commented that this was a very controversial issue, but was not due to be dealt with until the League’s AGM in July.

** At the AGM the League decided that third placed Bancffosfelen would be promoted instead of Evans & Williams.

LLANELLI STAR - April 1969

Trallwm beat Banc to Premier Division

Trallwmm 3 Bancffosfelen 1

With this victory over Banc, Trallwm have made certain of promotion to the Premier Division.
Alan Edwards opened the scoring with a powerful shot following a corner after 10 minutes. Les Smith almost made it two with a brilliant header, and Jef Hopkins sent a screaming shot just over the bar. Banc equalised midway through the half on one of their rare raids on the Trallwm goal. Despite playing against the wind, Trallwm continued to dominate the second half, with a Les Smith header superbly saved by the Banc keeper and Phil Williams hitting the bar with a superb effort.
A flare up between Alan Edwards and a Banc defender resulted in both players being sent off by referee M J Bush. Shortly afterwards Les Smith put Trallwm in front.
Then came arguably the goal of the season as Jeff Hopkins took a pass in his stride and waltzed past three strong tackles before unleashing an unstoppable drive into the top corner of the net.

BANC PROMOTED TO PREMIER DIVISION

Bancffosfelen 2 Dafen 0

In their final game of the season which would determine who would be Division One champions, Dafen travelled to Banc and despite doing most of the attacking were halted in their tracks by two Banc goals.
On a hard surface with the ball bouncing around Dafen never really settled down to playing the football that they had displayed in recent weeks.
Banc took the lead mid way through the first half when a cross from the right caught the Dafen defence napping, allowing the Banc inside forward to smash the ball into the net.
Dafen were then given a golden opportunity to equalise when they were awarded a penalty, but to their dismay skipper Wyn Cummins shot wide from the spot.
The match was more or less settled some 10 minutes before time when the Banc centre forward latched onto a through ball, brought it under control and finished superbly to put Banc 2 – 0 up.
The scoreline remained leaving Bancffosfelen, not just promoted to the Premier Division, but also Division One Champions.

Final standing – Bancffosfelen 26 pts, Trallwm 25 pts and Dafen 23 pts.

This result clinched the League and Cup Double for Bancffosfelen as
they had earlier in the month beaten Carway 1 – 0 at Steboneath Park
to win the Challenge Cup.
At the time Bancffosfelen were the first ever Club to accomplish such a feat.

Late Penalty and Porth win Mond Cup

Bancffosfelen 2 Porthyrhyd 3

For the second time in their proud history Porthyrhyd won the Mond Cup at Richmond Park last Saturday. In a thrilling cliff hanger finish they just pipped neighbours Bancffosfelen to snatch a win in a game that looked almost certain to end in stalemate.
The first half progressed with neither team making much impact, with Porthyrhyd lacking purpose while Bancffosfelen although creating chances were much too deliberate in front of goal.
Lanky centre forward Mike Siddons who stood head and shoulders above Porth’s Alan Richards looked slow and cumbersome and never seemed to master the tricky wind, and his height advantage was seldom utilised by the service from his colleagues. Roy Davies and Heulwyn Davies struggled to dominate midfield for Banc and failed to supply the desired service to potential match winner Peris Rees at inside left, who continued to work hard in trying to infuse his own personal enthusiasm into his team mates.
Porth keeper Glanmor Jones had an unhappy game and must take most of the blame for both goals scored against him. His usual safe handling was sadly amiss and he generally fumbled his way through the game. Banc keeper Alan Rowlands had a generally quiet first half and was only seriously called into action once when having to dive full length to deal with a Keith Richards effort on goal. Porth were poor in their approach work in the first half with centre half Raymond Williams and full backs Anthony Hurley and Peter Jones completely blotting out the threat of Porth’s Terry Wiliams, Keith Richards and Brian Rees.
Porth’s first half heroes were overworked full backs Billy Evans and Dorian Jones who had their hands full in handling the threat of Adrian Thomas and Peter Griffiths, plus the supporting danger men, Peris Rees and Derrick Lewis.
The enthusiastic and vociferous Banc supporters willed on their team and their efforts were rewarded when Mike Siddons latched onto a corner to give Banc the lead. Banc held the lead until the closing stages of the half which saw Porth transformed by the efforts of midfielders Peter Wiliams and Ian Kent. Their efforts were soon rewarded when a Keith Richards cross was slotted home by Terry Williams.
Porth continued to dictate the second half with Peter Harding dominant in setting up waves of attacks that tested the Banc defence. Gaps started to appear as Harding and Kent supplied defence splitting passes that caused all sorts of problems.
Porth went ahead in the 60th minute when after breaking up a Banc attack Dorian Jones supplied a through ball which Peter Harding pounced upon for an excellent finish.
Not to be outdone Banc gradually got back into the game, and a tactical change with Roger Davies replacing Mike Siddons led to a more purposeful and dangerous looking Banc team.
The excitement was intense as Banc threw everything into attack resulting in the Porth goal leading a charmed life. With barely 10 minutes to go, and Porth looking like holding on a harmless looking through ball was misjudged by the Porth keeper, resulting in Peris Rees pouncing and volleying home the equaliser.
With time running out, a Porth attack, was adjudged to have been thwarted by a hand ball, resulting in a penalty. Porth skipper Billy Evans coolly stepped up to hammer home the penalty and bring the Mond Cup to Porthyrhyd.
Praise was given to both teams for an excellent game and very sporting approach, played with no signs of any ill feeling. The Man of the Match award went to Porth’s Peter Harding.
A word of praise also to referee Alan Latham who controlled the game in a genial yet highly efficient manner.

NOTE – Referee was ex Porthyrhyd player – Conspiracy ????????????

Season 1973 – 74

Good Start for Banc

Bancffosfelen soccer team have started their season very promisingly, thanks to a number of new signing’s which should prove an asset to the Club.
In all 34 players have signed for the club so far, so the prospects seem good for both the first and second teams for the coming season. The Juniors are also busy preparing for the season and are eagerly awaiting their first game.
Banc have already played two friendlies, both away from home.
The first game saw them draw 3 – 3 with local rivals Ponthenri, the highlight of the game being a brilliant hat trick from Robert Hancock.
Banc played Tenby side New Hedges in their second match and beat them 4 – 3. This was the first time that New Hedges had been beaten for over a year. Ian Ritchie, Peris Rees, Robert Hancock and Gary Bird scored for Banc.

Seaside 0 Bancffosfelen 1

Banc maintained their good start to the season with a 1 – 0 away victory at Crown Park, Seaside. It proved to be a closely fought match with both teams showing off their skills. The match was eventually decided courtesy of a fine goal from Peris Rees.
Thereafter Banc defended resolutely to secure the points.
Team – Roger Harries, Gareth Rees, Dorian Jones, Malcolm Hughes, Martin Holland, Alan Lewis, Peris Rees, Gary Bird, Robert Hancock, Ian Ritchie and RyanBowen.

Banc Reserves picked up valuable points in beating Killay 3-2.
Scorers were Wyn James (2) and Barney Morgan.

Bancffosfelen 2 Banffosfelen Res 1

A situation was created last Saturday that led to the firsts playing the Reserves. Just before departing to Ammanford the firsts were told that their opponents could not field a team, and at home, when the match official failed to turn up Evans & Williams refused to take the field without a nominated League referee. ** It later transpired that the referee had his kit stolen from the bus whilst travelling to the match **
Both teams therefore went head to head giving the selectors a wonderful opportunity to compare standards and assess the talent on show.
Scorers were Gary Bird and Roger Davies ( 1sts ) and Tony Sauro ( Res )
First –Roger Harries, Gareth Rees, Dorian Jones, Roger Davies, Peter Jones,Alan Lewis, Gary Bird, Peris Rees, Ian Ritchie, Robert Hancock, Ryan Bowen.
Reserves – Alan Rowlands, Malcolm Hughes, Esmor John, Paul Thomas, Martin Holland, David Lewis, Tony Sauro, Peter Wyrboll. Eryl Morgan, Wyn James, IanPugh.

Season 1974 – 75

MOND CUP - Drawn Yet Again against Newcastle Emlyn

Newcastle Emlynn 2 Bancffosfelen 2

Banc should have returned from Newcasle Emlyn victorious, but lapses in defence allowed the Cardiganshire League side to score two late goals to force a replay.
The gamble of playing youngster Philip Jones seemed to be paying off for Banc and with the midfield dominant it was no surprise to see Brian Evans open the scoring for Banc with a well struck effort. Midway through the half Peris Rees increased the lead following some neat team play. With Banc seemingly in complete control, many judged this to be the best Banc performance for some time. However it was not meant to be and the home team fought gallantly and were rewarded with an equaliser in injury time.
The game was expertly controlled by John Evans of New Quay who the previous Saturday had taken control of the Welsh Amateur Cup final.

Replay

Bancffosfelen 0 Newcastle Emlyn 1

Newcastle Emlyn put up the fight of their lives to win this Mond Cup replay against Bancffosfelen, which was played in atrocious conditions at Pontyberem Park. As it turned out one goal was enough to settle the encounter. This came midway through the first half when from a Peter Esau free kick the ball was headed down for Graham Hicks to hammer home.
Banc stepped up a gear and continued to press, but their efforts were not helped by the sending off of one of their players just before half time. Despite their valiant efforts Banc were unable to breakdown a resilient Emlyn defence, and the visitors hung onto grab victory.

Season 1975 - 76

MAHONEY BECOMES BANC MEMBER

Brilliant Welsh international midfielder John Mahoney has become an Honorary member of Bancffosfelen Football Club.
Mahoney who has given world class performances for Wales, met officials and members of Banc after the game against Yougoslavia in Cardiff.
On being offered the membership, he duly replied that he would honoured to accept and glad to become a member of Bancffosfelen Football Club.

Season 1976 – 77

Carmarthenshire League – Premier Division

Ammanford 1 Bancffosfelen 1

In their away game at Ammanford, Bancffosfelen gained their first point of the season. After ten successive defeats the Premiership newcomers gave a competent show and fully deserved their draw. Despite falling behind Banc fought tenaciously and were rewarded through a Robert Hancock goal ten minutes from time.

Deserved Better

Bancffosfelenn 1 Gorseinon 2

Bancffosfelen’s run of bad luck seems to continue as despite this prominent showing they still went down narrowly to Gorseinon at Pontyberem Park.
Banc pressurised the visitors goal and the woodwork came to their rescue to prevent a Banc lead. The long throwing of Wyn Jones caused chaos in the visiting defence and it was a total injustice to see the visitors accumulate a 2 – 0 lead. The only Banc reward came from a Roger Davies penalty. This latest defeat still leaves Banc with only a solitary point to show from their twelve league matches.
Team – Roger Harries, Adrian Thomas, Roger Davies, Peter Jones, Wyn Jones, Eirian Emmanuel, Robert Hancock, Ian Ritchie, Tony Sauro, Peris Rees and Philip Jones.

Pontardulais 2 Bancffosfelen 2

Banc produced their best performance of the season when they drew 2 – 2 with Pontardulais who currently stand, second in the Premier Division. Both the referee and opposition were full of admiration of the Banc efforts, which belied their lowly league position.
Pontardulais led twice during the match, but Banc were in no mood to surrender, equalising through a Roger Davies penalty and a glorious header from Robert Hancock from a sweet Tony Sauro corner.

BANCFFOSFELEN finish bottom and are Relegated from the Premier Division of the Carmarthenshire League. ??????

HANG ON !!! - NOT QUITE !!!

They receive a reprieve when the Carmarthenshire League decide to increase the number of teams in the Premier Division, and Banc remain in the top flight.

Season 1977 – 78

Bancffosfelen 5 Porthyrhyd 1

Bancffosfelen gained two vital points, in their Premier Division match with Porthyrhyd at the Park. Gaining their second win and scoring eleven goals in four matches will certainly boost confidence. This victory was the best for some time.
Banc started well with Peter Jones scoring early and despite a Porth equaliser further goals followed from Tony Sauro and a well taken hat trick from Peris Rees.

Bancffosfelen 4 Carmarthen Town 0

Last season Bancffosfelen found it very tough going in the Premier Division, suffering a heavy defeat against Carmarthen. This result and comprehensive thrashing of their opponents clearly shows the progress they have made, into a well established Premier Division side. This was a wonderful team effort, with Eirian Emmanuel giving Banc the lead from a Roger Davies cross. It then became the Tony Sauro show as the winger put up a devastating show in scoring a hat trick.

Ammanford 0 Bancffosfelen 2

Banc turned in one of their best displays of the season at Ammanford in this Premier Division match. None would deny Banc’s superiority on the day and their efforts were rewarded with goals from Peris Rees and Eirian Emmanuel.

Season 1978 - 79

Bancffosfelen are going to find it tough going in the Premier Division this season. With a number of established players retiring, together with transfers, new players will have to be found if they are to maintain their present status.

Llanelli 1 Bancffosfelen 0

Banc undeservedly lost narrowly to Llanelli at Steboneath with the only goal coming from a first half penalty. Had the referre awarded Banc a seemingly just penalty towards the end the supporters of both clubs would not have complained. Ex Banc player Tony Sauro captained Llanelli for the day, but was unable to stamp his authority over his old team mates.
Team - Roger Harries, Adrian Thomas, Gareth Rees, Eryl Walters, Alan Lewis, Robert Hancock, Kevin Edmunds, Lyndon Evans, Peris Rees, Robert Thomas and Gareth Howells.

Porthyrhyd 1 Bancffosfelen 4

In the process of winning 4 – 1 Banc taught Porthyrhyd a salutary lesson in this Premier Division fixture. Porthyrhyd seemed quite content to pass the ball around but a number of their players concentrated on individual artistry that seemed to get them nowhere. In contrast Banc were much more direct . Banc were level at the break through a Gareth Howells strike, but took complete control in the second half with further goals from Robert Hancock, Peris Rees and a Kevin Edmunds penalty, after ex Banc player Ian Ritchie had brought down Peris Rees.
