North Devon Surf School

We have taught people to surf from every walk of life, every ability and all fitness levels, not to mentions age variations. But the common factor is fun. Yes, fun. You will learn to surf quicker and easier if you just relax and have fun! We have a unique coaching technique that works. Literally thousands of people have learnt to stand up and ride a wave after a couple of lessons. Lessons are in small groups so you can learn at your own pace and we get to spend lots of time with each person. Westward Ho! has the European blue flag award for clean water and is patrolled by the RNLI lifeguards. The surf school operates from the Northam Burrows end of the beach, this is actually a country park with a golf course and lots of parking and picnic space. The experienced surfers tend to head off to the more powerful waves of Croyde, Woolacombe and Newquay... brilliant! This leaves us a really mellow uncrowded beach where we can surf as badly as we want! We don't have to worry about getting in the way of others, or worry about crashing into people. This is as good as it gets!

Hockings Ice Cream

Hockings Dairy Cream Ices are a small long established family business who manufacture and retail their own original vanilla dairy icecream from an old recipe handed down from previous generations. The icecream is only sold from their own vans found throughout North Devon. The business was started in 1936 by Dave Hocking with one van, a 1928 Morris Cowley converted to an icecream van by a local firm of coachbuilders. They expanded when Dave (senior) was joined by his son Dave (junior) after the war, and together with other family members they gradually expanded and added sites and vans until today the business has 12 vans and is run by grandsons Geoff and Neil Hocking and great grandson Andrew.

Kingsley School

Edgehill College was founded in 1884, Stella Maris Convent (later Stella Maris School) in 1929 and Grenville College in 1954. For more than half a century, the North Devon market town of Bideford was well-served by these three fine independent schools, each with its own Christian ethos, Edgehill being a member of the Methodist group of schools, Stella Maris originally being a Catholic Convent School and Grenville part of the Church of England Woodard Foundation. Edgehill and Stella Maris were for many years girls’ schools, while Grenville was for boys until its merger with Stella Maris in 1994. In January 2009, Edgehill College and Grenville College came together under the aegis of the Methodist Schools, to create the first new independent school in the region for more than half a century.
