This was arguably our best performance of the season to date. We dominated the match from start to finish and the opposition only had one effort on goal all afternoon. Unfortunately they scored from their one opportunity, while at the other end of the pitch we missed a hatful of chances and this made the final result very tight.
We started the match very well indeed. We played with a high tempo and high pressing game and this forced Collegians onto the back foot and saw us dominate proceedings from the first whistle. During the first 15 minutes we had three excellent chances to score. Firstly Charlie hit the bar with a rasping shot from 20 yards and then Scott also had two great opportunities; the first drew a great save from the keeper and the second flew narrowly over the bar. The goal that our domination deserved however came on the 20 minute mark and it was very well worked. Great play down our left side involving Jamie Chapman, Charlie Gregan, Chris Bevis and Dan Sibthorpe released Jason Venner in an advanced midfield position and his run and shot could only be parried by the keeper and Scotty Church was on hand to tap home the loose ball. We then made the first of many substitutions as we adopted a rotation policy on the day but this did not disrupt us and we soon doubled our lead when Dave Rogers headed home a Charlie Gregan corner. We continued to play well and we created a number of further excellent opportunities to score but unfortunately none were taken. Meanwhile at the other end of the pitch Collegians scored 10 minutes before half time with their only serious chance of the game. We came off at the break thoroughly deserving our lead.
The second half was completely one way traffic and Collegians rarely ventured into our half. We hit the cross bar on two more occasions and the Collegians keeper was outstanding, pulling off an incredible number of fantastic saves to keep us at bay. The longer the game went on the more desperate we became to score a third goal to ensure that Collegians could not breakaway and score an equaliser. We played very sensibly in the final five minutes however and kept the ball very well to ensure that we recorded the victory that our performance deserved. Man of the Match – Jason Venner. This lad is really settling into the team well after joining the club a few weeks ago.
