18th October 2014           Old Southendian             Away                    Southend Charity Competition

This was a very poor performance today, we didn’t really get going at any stage of the game and we allowed the opposition far too much time and space with poor positioning and poor passing.  The wind and the slope were both in Southendian’s favour in the first half but we started the match quite well and had the better of the opening exchanges.  We opened the scoring after 20 minutes when when Jamie Campion finished from close range following an excellent in-swinging corner from Charlie Gregan.   Old Southendian equalised ten minutes later when one of a number of long balls over the top caught our defence cold.  We continued to play reasonably well however and we went back in front ten minutes before the break.  Fantastic work by Jamie Chapman resulted in him playing a great through ball for sparrow to run onto and he poked a first time finish past the on-rushing keeper from 20 yards out.

The second half got off to the worst possible start when we conceded from a corner kick.  Old Southendian were then the better side for the majority of the second half but we re-established our lead against the run of play 10 minutes from time when a long clearance from Colin Guard in our goal evaded the opposition’s back line and Scott Church was on hand to steer the ball home.  Unfortunately we could not hold onto our lead and Old Southendian equalised for a third time with another headed goal direct from a long throw in.

Extra time was a step too far for us.  We had spent the majority of the previous 45 minutes being second best and we ran out of steam completely.  Old Southendian deservedly scored a couple of goals and went through to the next round of the cup.  Chris Beavis was voted Man of the Match for his tireless effort in midfield.
