After last weekends defeat in the Quarter-Final of the Memorial Cup, Blossom were keen to put that behind them as they played host to LSS Westlands. Westlands were forced to play the first ten minutes of the match with ten men, as they had a couple of late arrivals for the game. Taking this into account Blossom started the match brightly and had much early possession, playing some tidy football all over the park, with Hanslip and Young involved almost everywhere. Cousins and Fitzgerald linked well down the left for Blossom, bringing Nimmo and Wadieh into things at every opportunity up front, whilst Kilday was also lively and saw much of the early play down the Blossom right. It took just 5 minutes for Blossom to open the scoring as Fitzgerald played in Wadieh who lashed home from 20-yards. Minutes later Fitzgerald was again the provided as he played in a delightful ball for Kilday to steady himself and fire home for 2-0. Blossom continued to create chances, but did not take them as LSS, now at a full compliment of 11 players, defended well and their keeper pulled off a few vital stops. As Blossom pushed on LSS began to get their foot in the game and had some great spells of possession themselves, forcing a goal line clearance from Cousins and a great save from Blossom's debutant keeper, Steve Harris. Spreckley and Raworth formed an effective partnership at the heart of the Blossom defence and were ably assisted by fullbacks Snell and Cousins, snuffing out most attacks from the persistent LSS side. Just before half-time Blossom effectively killed off any hope of a LSS comeback with a third goal, as Nimmo crossed in for Wadieh to tap home from a few yards out.
In the second half LSS started the brighter and played some neat football as the game began to open up and become a little dis-jointed. But it was Blossom that came out on top again as the newly introduced Price played an acute ball in for Nimmo to turn and slot home. LSS continued to press and looked dangerous going forward, but were snuffed out in the main by the outstanding Raworth and Spreckley who won almost every tackle and header. Groce was then introduced up-front and he was on the score sheet within minutes, as Kilday and Nimmo linked well to release him one-on-one with the keeper and, as in many recent matches, he came out on top to slot home. LSS' persistence then paid off as on a rare slip up from the Blossom defence a LSS forward drilled home from inside the box. But, as in the first half, it was Blossom who had the final word, as they created yet more chances of which three were taken. First Nimmo played in Price to round the keeper and square to Groce for a tap-in, before Hanlsip then played in Nimmo and just as Price had done before, he unselfishly squared for the awaiting Groce to complete a quick-fire hat-trick. Kilday then grabbed his second of the match with a fine solo run and drive from just inside the box. LSS could have pulled one back in the final minute as Bailie rounded the Blossom keeper, but just as he was about to tap home the ball bobbled up and he missed the target, enabling the Blossom defence to get back and clear. So an impressive 8-1 win for a Blossom side who have been so inconsistent this term, but impressive when on form. Blossom thank LSS for the match and also the referee for taking charge.
