Huge thanks to Ant & the Shrewsbury lads for coming over to Oldbury on Saturday. I said to our lads before the game that Shrewsbury are one of the best sides & most organised sides they will come across in the IFA & they proved me right from 1st to final whistle!
Both sides started excellently but soon cancelled each other out in all positions on the pitch with no real clear cut chances being created.
The first goal had to be something special or lucky & went to Shrewsbury. free kick on the left hand touchline was floated in & what would normally be an easy one for our keeper "Big Show" went through his hands and sort of pushed it into the goal.
Boing were soon on level terms with the 1st of 3 excellent goals in this game. After a neat passing move, Ben Wallace found himself 20 yards out un-challenged & unleashed a thunderbolt which clipped the underneath of the crossbar on the way in.
Boing then took the lead after again Ben Wallace found himself free in the box to put his header past the keeper.
Shrewsbury then hit back with yet another slice of luck. Their forward did well to beat one player & get his shot of which took a wicked deflection of a defender and sent the ball in the opposite direction & past Big Show who was already going the other way.
Boing again took the lead when Chris Hunter spotted the keeper off his line and curled the ball up & over the keepers head into the opposite top corner.
Half time – Boing 3-2 Shrewsbury
Boing furthered their lead with about 15 mins to go. A ball over the top from dave Chall (making his comeback from injouy) found Ben Wallace who made no mistake with his shot & bag a hatrick.
The Shrewsbury lads let their frustration known with Boing's 5th goal as they appealed for offside with only 2 minutes remaining. I (as ref) clearly saw that ben Wallace had run past their defender but the linesman had raised his flag. I don't normally go against my assistant but this time I was 110% sure I got this one right but in all fairness to Ant (Shrews gaffer), he calmed the situation very well as I think I did at their place last year when one of their goals looked a mile offside & the ref ignorred our linesman that day.
Shrewsbury hit back with literally the last kick of the game. Their lad hit a beauty into the top left corner of the goal with our keeper only managing to get his fingertips on it.
It was a terrific game played by not only 2 excellent teams but real good set of lads on both sides. A real pleasure to referee. I believe we visit Shrewsbury in 3 weeks, one i look forward to every season as Shrewsbury are a real cracking bunch.
