Another chapter in Boldmere's Football History.
03 Aug 2012

With the start of the new season, Mick Talbot looks ahead to another chapter in Boldmere’s history.

‘A few week’s can be a long time in sport even more so when it concerns Boldmere St Michael’s. Written off  already  by so called experts after last season’s disappointing performances in the Midland Football Alliance, will not concern them as the “Mikes” have a habit of bouncing back.’

Think back to last term and their away and home wins over Gresley Rovers who were the eventual Champions of the MFA.  To put a shine on those results you have to remember that Rovers lost just seven League games all season. Not for the first time have the “Mikes” showed they are capable of turning the form book on its head.

Beating Gresley twice in the MFA was very satisfying and the players (even the substitutes) were very much up for those matches. Yet before and since those games they certainly hadn't performed to a level expected by the faithful at Church Road.  Boldmere have shown that they have the skill to match anyone but their game was too patchy over the 2011-2012 season.

You can analyse it forever and come up with some deep, meaningful theory as to why Boldmere were disappointing. Yet they finished fourth in the MFA the previous season. I guess you need, at a minimum, six players that are consistently playing to their full maximum on any given Saturday afternoon  or Tuesday evening for the whole team to play well.

Boldmere will need to establish early momentum in the League, starting with their opening game at Church Road H.Q. against Alvechurch Football Club. Their enthusiastic early efforts, as they return to League action, must count as goals on the scoreboard so the visitors’ will have an unreachable target well before half-time.

Returning to their traditional colours - originally worn in the 1960s - is a smart move for the Mikes. It show that they have never lost their link to their great history, and, as a football historian, I like that.
