Report

So that day had arrived that we were all dreading.  The last game of the season!  Saturdays wont be the same for 5 months without the Green Army meeting up and Jacob being late, Dan forgetting the skippers armband, Pete the socks, Mick having his pre-match fag, Jon losing his bucket, Josh running the line and Noah being a pain in the backside!

With the league finished, the Green Army travelled to AW London for the third time this season for a friendly to end the season.  A few of the regulars were not around but Green were still able to put out a strong squad.  The starting line up was;

Fennings, Sexton, Law, CookD, Hall, Young, Rayfield, James, HigginsR, Knight, CookG.  Subs were Pape and Pattinson.

Green got off to a fabulous start by going 1-0 up in just a couple of minutes.  With the ball coming across him on the edge of the box, Paul Young hit a great low drive into the AW net.  Moments later Green got a corner and Rhys Higgins’ near post corner was met by Graeme Cook who nodded home Greens second to make it 2-0.  Ten minutes later it was 3-0 when some great work by Young on the right wing was followed by a pin point cross to Dan Knight who rose a little to nod home from one foot.

AW made some effective changes and Green brought on Josh Pattinson and Billy Pape.  Green were solid at the back with Hall, CookD, Law and Sexton dealing with all that AW threw at them.

In the second half AW were much more threatening and had most of the play.  A really dodgy freekick was prodded home to make it 3-1.  Five minutes later AW got their second when the forward was clean through to pass the ball into Greens net.  The forward was at least 5 yards offside but the useless linesman wasn’t watching and missed the offside.  Green then immediately made another sub, this time Knight was replaced by Pattinson on the line to avoid a repeat disaster.

To help stem the flow of continuous AW attacks, CookD moved into midfield with Rayfield and James, with CookG going back to centre back.  Attack after attack was repelled and alot of hard work was needed to keep AW at bay.  Green did have chances to extend their lead through Young and James but their shots were denied.

Green held on to take the win and end the season with 3 very good wins.

MOTM?  Jacob Law and Graeme Cook had good games, although Law owes that more to his defensive partners.  Cook was influential in seeing off the AW attacks but that was mainly down to the non-stop hard work of the tenacious and resilient midfield play of Darren Cook, who easily deserves the MOTM for not only playing 90 minutes  in his first game after a transplant, but also for never giving up and bolstering the midfield where AW were outnumbering Green.  Plus he writes these reports and can say what he wants to say!
