In June 2003 Bowburn Boys FC was formed having only 1 team, the team was a mixed team consisting of 6 Boys and 4 Girls. In December 2004 the Girls formed their own team called Bowburn Girls FC which gave the Club 3 Teams in Season 2004/ 2005: U8's, U9's & U10's Girls.
The 3 Teams which kicked off Youth Football in Bowburn decided to form a new far superior Club with no ties to any other Organisations, and along with 3 of the other Teams formed Bowburn Athletic FC in June 2008.
(Plans had been drawn up in April 2008 to form the new Club with 2 Teams only based at Mainsforth Sports Complex. But 6 Teams left the old Club to be part of the new Club "Bowburn Athletic FC").
Bowburn Athletic FC was awarded the FA Charter Standard Club Award by the Football Association on 18th July 2008.
