South East Combination

After five successive promotions Braintree Town Ladies stepped up to the South East Combination, the third tier of women’s football. The step up proved far bigger than any previous season and despite strengthening the squad and enjoying a good start the Ladies was unable to maintain their place in the league.

The season started with a draw at Luton Town and a win at Old Actonians, but reality of the task that faced them struck when they suffered heavy back to back defeats against Cambridge. Indeed the league season would see the Iron win just one of their final twenty games, although their efforts deserved more and they certainly weren’t aided by a number of curious refereeing decisions.

In the cups exits at the first stage of the League Cup, to Tottenham Hotspur, and FA Women’s Cup, to Cambridge, were quickly forgotten as the team made the Semi Finals of the Essex Women’s Cup for a fifth time in their short six year history. A fourth final eluded the Iron as they were edged out in a single goal defeat to Hutton.
