The season began with the Don Frost Cup against last year's double winners Cromer Town at Norwich United in mid-August. We lost Billy MacGregor and Marcus Webber to retirement and Roy Bland suffered a leg fracture at the end of the previous campaign. Replacing them we had Mark Winstone returning from a double leg break, Shaun Wegg and Sean Brown from Sprowston Athletic and Tony Wright expected to make the transition to first team regular.
The Cromer game indicated a shift in the power balance in the league as Brandon ran out 3-2 winners with Bellingham, Waites and Wright netting for Town. The performance was indicative of the season to come. When earning the right to play football, Brandon are a team to be admired.
A good opening to the league campaign saw comfortable wins against Attleborough Town and Mattishall while North Walsham caused a minor surprise by hoding us to 1-1 at the Rec.
September proved to be an indifferent month with a cup victory over Mundford followed by two wins and two losses, narrow victories at Halvergate and home to Lowestoft Reserves sandwiched two heavy defeats, firstly at home to Sprowston Athletic and then at Blofield with the aid of some dubious gamesmanship on the part of the home side. These results were achieved without Captain Bellingham serving a 5 game suspension for an infraction while playing Sunday football.
October saw more cup success at Beccles Town and Wymondham, the Beccles game in particular saw one of the teams best performances of the season. A home victory against Cromer was followed by an awful defensive display at St Andrews as Town were heavily beaten.
November began with the daunting trip to Sheringham with a patched up side, admittedly playing for a draw, the Fates shone kindly that day and we nicked three points and everyone played their part. When Corston saved a penalty in the last quarter the points were well-earned. A comfortable home win over Beccles was followed by a Senior Cup tie at Debenham on a mire. Excellent football counted for naught as Debenham were clinical in the finishing and ran out winners.
December gave the first indication of Town's title chances as 4 league wins propelled them up the table. Narrow wins over Acle and Norwich Union showed battling qualities. In the middle they were comprehensively beaten at home by Blofield in the Mummery Cup but bounced back with 4 goal margins against Mattishall and Attleborough.
The New Year brought 3 more victories and a draw to earn Town Team of the Month and 9 consecutive wins saw Brandon rise to the top of the Premier league table for the first time in their history. Norwich Union, Acle and Halvergate were again the victims before a draw at Lowestoft Reserves to close out January.
February began with a home win over St Andrews before a reverse at Cromer. A tough month then finished well with a victory at Dersingham before a huge crowd saw Town complete the double over Sheringham to go 5 points clear at the top.
March proved costly as two postponements broke continuity and were accompanied by defeats at Sprowston Athletic where Corston put up a magnificent performance between the sticks to give us a chance of something. A fortnight later a sluggish first half cost us dear as we went down at home to Dersingham. The month ended with us getting back on track with a comfortable win at Beccles.
Cometh April and a pulsating match at home to Wroxham Reserves ended in a 3-3 draw though either side could have won, Brandon had given the impetus to Blofield as they carved out win after win to chase Town down. A nervy win at North Walsham kept the pressure on Blofield but a catastrophic loss at Wroxham Reserves for Town cost them any chance of the title. When it came to the last match of the season at home to Blofield the title had been decided but Town put in a superb display to hand the Sterry Cup winners a heavy defeat.
It is hard to be negative about a season which has seen Brandon Town achieve their highest league finish and amassed their best points total, but having watched every Town game the fact is inescapable that Brandon threw away the league rather than that Blofield won it.
The traditional end of season Charity Cups saw Town win another piece of Silverware when they defeated local neighbours Lakenheath 6-1 in the Snailwell Cup Final.
