Report

Fresh on the back of a good performance against last season's champions, The Wanderers went into this game with a renewed belief. Some of our play in the earlier game had been first-class and was a good indication that we could secure our first win here. The opponents were to be Boca Seniors and with some legs battered and bruised, the starting line-up was decided. In came new signing Tommy Collins and there were places warming the bench for King Kenny, Five Minute Phil, Alan and Ernie. As the referee called the teams together, there was a good feeling to this...

The Wanderers clearly wanted this and from the first whistle we went looking for the goal to take the lead. Tommy was dictating things in the middle of the park and as he received the ball on 3 minutes, he looked up and played in Dave who smashed the ball high into the top corner and put us 1-0 up! Tommy was showing why we paid all that money for him during pre-season and when he clipped a great ball out to Brian on 5 minutes, our top scorer had the simple task of slamming the ball home to put us 2-0 up!

Well on top now, it looked as though the Boca heads had dropped and Brian is the man to take advantage of that. He controlled the ball well on 9 minutes, turned on a sixpence and curled a great shot inside the far post to give us a 3-0 lead. This was dreamland!!! Especially when the ball then found it's way to Alan 'Speed Demon' Kenney. He dipped his shoulder and cut inside his marker before unleashing a stunning 20 yarder that flew past the keeper and nearly ripped the net on it's way in. 4-0 and could we get the three points?

There was an excellent chance to increase the lead when we were awarded a penalty on 18 minutes. Up stepped Dave and as he smashed the ball towards the corner, the Boca keeper sprung across the line to tip it wide superbly. But it didn't matter. Oh No. Because Mr Kenney then created a chance for himself that he finished superbly so with the score now at 5-0, surely this was to be our first victory...

The nerves were still there though and were jangling like Bet Lynch's ear-rings when Boca managed to sneak one low past Mario's left hand and with it now 5-1, would we blow it? Of course not. Tommy made sure of that. He ran onto a great through-ball, picked his spot and smashed the ball into the roof of the net to regain the five goal advantage but Mario was still busy and pulled off a majestic double save to deny the opposition. Gripping stuff...

Brian wasn't finished yet though and when he received the ball 20 yards from goal, The Wanderers fans gathered behind the goal knew what was coming next. He jinxed inside and out before stroking the ball home from the edge of the box and with the score now standing at 7-1, we could relax a little...

King Kenny was desperate to be part of the first winning side and came on for a 5 minute cameo and there was still time for us to grab our eight before the referee brought proceeedings to an end. We had won! 8-1! A superb victory for The Wanderers and everybody had played their part in this historic match. The handshakes were done and as the players left the arena, the smiles were beaming from ear to ear...

Let's hope this is the first of many lads! Well done!

COME ON THE WANDERERS!!!
