Broadmead FC |
The history of Broadmead FC is a long-winded tale of talent wasted, talent fulfilled, talent discovered and the burning ambition of the clubs chairman and founders.
The history of this great club can be traced as far back as 1995. Small-sided football was just becoming the mega past time it is today. A fraternal and youthful combination of brothers John & David Berry, and their cousins Paul and Steven Berry, along side life long friend Alexander Foreman decided to pit their skills against other local sides. The boys acquitted them selves’ well finishing a respectable 4th place in the inaugural John Henry Newman League. They developed a unique and distinctive style of slow build-up, counter attacking football built around a deep-sweeper system.
The following season new signing were required, in particular the now legendary free-scoring striker Richard Gaudion. A 3rd placed finish and the desperately unlucky last-kick of the game 1-0 loss in the cup final to ultra successful local rivals Toppers represented good progress.
In 1996/7 Broadmead FC moved to the Malcolm Hunt Memorial league. A credible 3rd place finish included a record 13-0 demolition of the Herts Deaf Association, and an infamous 2-1 victory over local legends Asia (then in their prime). The season came to an abrupt end with internal squabbling and the Berry Cousins parting ways.
A new look Broadmead side built around the talents of John & David Berry returned to the JHN league the following season, but it was never quite the same in terms of spirit, passion and the depth of the squads ability. University and work beckoned and the Meaders’ brand was retired.
In 2004 John Berry and Alex Foreman were now back from University. They along with David Berry decided to rekindle the Broadmead FC moniker. For the new incarnation, Andrew Fisher became the Meaders’ first full-time manager and John Berry became the clubs chairman. With their now legendary White and Green Hummel kits they embarked for success. New homegrown signings were made from the local area including Rob Eldridge & Ben Field. The team entered the newly developed Stevenage Boro Academy League. The team had mixed fortunes in their comeback season. Although the team finished 3rd, there were mixed results on the pitch and little cohesion. The one bright spot at the end of the season was the short-term loan signing of ex-Chelsea player John Bevan.
The team then moved to a newly started league in Hatfield. The team finished 2nd in the first season, and indeed on two other sub subsequent seasons. The high spot of the Hatfield campaigns was the re-signing of striker Paul Berry and keeper Keven Whitehead and newly emerged talent of Ben Antcliff.
During this time the Meaders entered several local cups and national competitions. While the national expeditions were less than fruitful for the boys in white and green, the team finally lifted silverware in the Hitchin Hemel Trophy in the Winter of 2004 with a two 5-4 two legged final victory over Chauldon Albion. The winning goal coming from the teams captain Alex Foreman. The team also backed up that result with a victory in the inaugural Hitchin – Ware Challenge.
The team then had an acrimonious falling out with the Hatfield league organizers due to what they deemed corruption, cheating and all the development of too violent a league. The team refused to play a crucial semi-final match in protest and as a matter of honor and principle. Many consider this to be the Meaders finest hour.
The Broadmead FC side returned to their spiritual home of the JHN league in the summer of 2005 for the first time in 9 years. This was celebrated with a 7-0 victory over Capital FC. The team then switched focus again to pastures old with a return to the Malcolm Hunt league. New signings brought including Wayne Smith, Simon West and Steven Young are hoped to pay dividends in the years to come.
