You may recently have seen the exploits of the University Staff 5-a-side football team who were crowned champions of the Dorset Shoot-4-Business Charity Football tournament. Bournemouth University Staff Team (B.U.S.T) Football Club was established in 2000 and up until recently has played friendly fixtures in the local area and further afield with overseas tours, winning many games but always playing within the spirit of the game! Originally set up by Richard ‘Sven’ Search to increase activity amongst staff members, under the management of Alan ‘Gareth Bale’ Fyall of Services Management the team has blossomed in recent years. With a mixture of youth (PhD students) and experience (Senior Academics and even a Pro-Vice-Chancellor) the team is now preparing to tackle the challenges of Bournemouth Hayward Football League Saturday Division 5!
We will be challenging for more honours against other teams in the Hampshire and Dorset area. To meet these rigours a new management team and committee have been formed; Alan Fyall has “moved upstairs” to his new role as Secretary supported by Prof. Nigel Hemmington as Chairman and bankrolled by Susanne Clarke as Treasurer (both of Services Management). Management of the team has been passed to Keith Parry and last season’s player of the year Tom Symons. The team consists of players from all Academic Schools and Support Services and is supported by BU Sport and Recreation. Coming to watch our games you will see Librarians, Lecturers, Programme Leaders, Web Designers, etc and the odd football player!
Over the summer the team trains from 6pm every Thursday on Wallisdown playing fields. Competition for places is high although we are always on the lookout for more staff members to add strength in depth. If you are interested in being part of a winning team contact one of our management and committee team.
