Memories of Dan |
Its 6 years now since the cock crow inn’s most famous and loyal fan sadly passed away on may 19th 2000.Daniel Hughes was grandfather to the two McKenna brothers but was also the adopted Gandad of many gaslight star that passed over the hallowed turf.
Dan followed the gaslight for almost all of the clubs existence thru thick and mainly thin come rain, hail or shine. Turning out to support the side what ever the weather even when some players cried off cos of the cold and wet. Dan started following the team way back in 1983 only a year after the club had been formed and supported the team from afar when he was unable to attend the games in his final months but still asked how they got on whenever any body went to see him.
To reflect Dan’s standing within the club he received several trophy’s from various club managers for being the supporter of the year on most occasions the only supporter. Dan even received a trophy along with the players for being part of the squad that almost completed a league and cup double back in 1997. He travelled home and away without fail even attending league meetings with club officials
Dan’s memory now lives on not only in players hearts but also in the form of the Danny Hughes memorial trophy which is awarded for outstanding contribution to the club every year.
