Our final game of the season at home to Perry Street was always going to be a difficult one, we were not up for it 100% as we had already won the league and Perry Street were really pumped up as still chasing promotion. To be fair, we started the better, for the first 20 minutes we played some of the best football we had played for quite a while. The passing was quick, the movement was great and every time we wnt forward we really looked like scoring.
The first talking point of the game came after 15 minutes, Robbie Walker was put in on goal, his shot was saved but Robbie using his strength well, flick the ball back toward the net. The ball was about 2 yards over the line when Gary Parfoot kicked it out, but Martin Ives, the ref, gave nothing and the game somehow started level. The goal shortly followed tho, good play down the left saw a cross find Karl Smith, who was playing in the centre of midfield in plenty of space, he easily found the net with a simple finish and gave us a very well deserved lead.
Scoring was maybe the worst thing to happen, as from this point we totally stopped playing the good football, the movement disappeared and the foot was taken of the gas. Perry Street's goal soon followed, Karl Smith tried a dangerous square ball about 30 yards from our goal, the pass was read by the Street player, who slotted the ball thru to Kevin Rowson, who hit his first time shot aback across goal giving Mark Pike no chance. Another poor decision for Ives then cost us the second. Danny Wiseman was pulled back on the edge of the Street area, nothing was given and the long cleanance again found Rowson, who closed in on goal, rounded Pike and slotted into the open net to give Steet the half time lead.
We again started the second half well, and shortly into it, we were awarded a penalty after thier keeper tripped Nick Eckland. Eckland then took the pen, but his weak shot was too straight and the keeper made an easy save. After this we created very little, we had plently of the ball, but the heart had gone and the effort that had got us back into so many games this season just was not thier. We missed Richard Evans in centre of the park, not only for his tackles and headers, but for the he keeps everyone going when we need to pull out a result. We had nobody to get hold of the game and change it around.
The game was completed with seven minutes left, when a break away from Street again saw Rowson in on goal. He beat our last man and placed hit right footed shot pass Pike, who had no chance with any of the goals, too score his hat-trick and give Steet a 3-1 victory.
Even tho it was disappointing to lose the game and also lose our home record and 14 games unbeaten in league, in the end we are the winners. We had won the league. Back in October after 5 games, we had won 3 and lost 2, from that point we knew that we had to go a good run, stay unbeaten and pick up the wins if we wanted to be champions. We did that, we proved over the season that we are the best team in league and we totally deserve to be the title holders.
Whatever league we are in next season, we have to do the same as we have done this year. Be in it together, play for the whole 90 minutes and never give up. I am hoping we can keep this squad together cos I have faith in every single one of them and I really do believe that next season can be even better then this one.
Again, Well done to every single squad member, wheather you played one match or every match, you played your part in our title winning season. Looking forward to seeing you all at presentation evening (when arranged!!!!) and again at pre-season training at the start of July!!!!!!!
