Prem Predictions #9

Week 11 Update [18 Apr @ 10:00pm]

Stalemate! The last five players in the comp all went for the Black Cats to beat Burnley at The Stadium of Light and all was looking comfortable until a mini-fightback from Burnley! However, Sunderland hung on and sent these five into another week of uncertainty. Interesting fixtures for next week.... Dave Killoran still has Villa to select but would he bet against his Birmingham side... or go for his Blues to beat the Villains away - what a happy w/e that would be for Dave! Gary Scowen has 'top' sides of Birmingham, Fulham and Stoke to pick from - but with Stoke away at The Bridge and Fulham away at Goodison (in a fixture where the home side always wins!) will he need to drop down the league further? Clive Tucker has to dig deep beyond 11th place in league table for Blackburn, Bolton (Home v Pompey) or Wigan (away v W Ham).... unless he fancies Fulham HA HA Young Jake may need to finger point a decent outift to his Dad as his limited availability is also down to Fulahm, B'burn and the rest of the relegation mix.... and finally Mark Tomkins may take inspiration from the 4th XI Nomads team as they play in the Garrison Cup Final next weekend and go for Bolton to beat Pompey or possibly gamble on Hull picking up a much needed three points v Sunderland who knows what will happen eh? Best of luck to all Phil

Week 10 Update [14 Apr @ 10:00pm]

Finally we have a week that cuts the wheat from the chaffe (whatever that means).... 26 players has now been cut down to a mere 5 as we move into week 11 with a possible three weeks left of the season to split them further. 11 out thanks to Dowie's dour Hull couldn't beat a very poor Burnley side at home... myself included amongst this lot... gambling on Hull to win... what was I thinking? And to Tony Peterson who might now be regretting picking Hull and 'saving Chelsea for next week'... oh no! Another 7 fell in the last game last night as Wigan drew a blank with a weakened Portsmouth side still giddy after their weekends cup success. 2 still had big gun Liverpool to select but fired wide as they drew with Fulham and finally one went for Wolves to beat Stoke in the fourth goal-less draw of the week. The famous five left are my brother Clive, Dave Killoran, debutants Gary Scowen, Mark Tomkins and our youngest player Jake Powell ! It's going to be tough this week - bring it on! Phil

Week 9 Update [4 Apr @ 10:00pm]

With only a possible 5 games left of the season we are now down to a mere 26 players following another exciting weekend of footy.... 18 through thanks to Stoke's victory over Hull including Farndon Dads who on Friday night "tried to drink enough lager to make this week's selection look good" - clearly they must have been drinking Carlsberg as the best aid to premier predictions in the world! Another 4 from Fulham's fightback against Wigan; 2 for City's emphatic win over Burnley and one for Villa winning at Bolton and finally a lonesome call of Arsenal winning (yes, still available for Mark Tomkins) as they struck in the 90+4th minute to seal the win. 5 dropped as Blackburn drew away at [nearly] relegated Portsmouth; 2 from Everton's draw with the hammers [v disappointing]; 1 for Bolton [?]; 1 [my lad James] for Tottenham away at Sunderland as Gomez saved two penalties and still they lost 3-1 - a very disappointed young lad in my house this w/e! Onto week 10, yes that's TEN! Most people are now down to the mid to bottom table selections but one or two still have United up their sleeve... this week they are away at Blackburn... is that a banker?

Week 8 [29 Mar @ 10:00pm]

As the final whistle blows on Week 8 we say goodbye to another 6 players as four fell when Zola's Hammers couldn't hit the net against Stoke... 1 more as Everton drew at home to Wolves in the battle of the 'in-form' teams and one for a tired Fulham who can thump Juve 4-1 but can't beat Hull - isn't football great! Most (16 players) through thanks to Harry's win over old club Pompey and 11 went for City in a game that produced two hat-tricks.... one for Teves and one for Gary Caudwell who this season has now managed to get sent off in the Premier, the Scottish Premier and for his country... how his Mum must be proud! 5 more went for the reds to 'do' Sunderland; 2 for Blackburn to beat local rivals Burnley away and finally one for Chelsea who scraped past Villa 7-1... Onto week 9 with 35 players left and the worry of having to pick a mid-table team really starts!

Week 7 Update [22 Mar @ 12:00am]

please can I remind anyone NOT paid yet to do so asap please (paypal, cash, checque etc) - if you are not sure please check the sheet. This week's results brought a few back to reality as Wolves made the Villians live up to thier name as they stole the lives of 38 players this weekend inlcuding departed Paris and her arch rival Speedy who both selected O'Neill's team which had the best defence in the league v McCarthy's Wolves who had the worst attacking record. A late Carew salvaged a point but that's not enough in this game. Also out are the Bunclark family (Brian, Sandra and Chris) and who have stuck to a previously succesful formula of putting all their eggs in one basket.... for 6 weeks they all selected the same teams but in week 7 became undone. Best selections amongst the 8 who cleverly saw that Wigan would beat Burnley came from Clive 'Zine' Davies who selected early but with little confidence: "In Early out Early this week, ...........Its Wigan for me. " Also worthy of note for what must be good bragging rights was Neil Waters (who's host Tony Dean has 6 work colleagues playing) became the last of his group to survive as the remaining 3 went for Villa and Neil stood alone being mocked selecting Wigan - great shout Neil! Wost selection (or possibly at least the justification of it) was from Scott Woods who said "It’s a difficult.......I can see quite a few going out this week with possibly me as one of them, I really want to back Everton to beat Bolton at Goodison but Everton have stitched me up twice in past seasons so I’m loathed to touch them as Bolton are on a good run so I’m gonna go for CHELSEA to win at Blackburn!" Sorry Scott! Another 4 out as Chelsea's dismal week continued away in Blackburn (to be fair away in Blackburn is quite dismal) So yes once again Everton win (7 home wins on the bounce... am I dreaming?) sending 17 through along with Arsenal (13) from a 2-0 win v West Ham; Also through are 2 for Portsmouth (yes they can win but maybe a little late in the day now) and Man City 1. That leaves 45 players left for week 8. Selections by Friday 6pm please. If you feel confident and are away at Easter give me a team for Week 9 too.

Week 6 Update [16 Mar @ 12:00am]

And the game goes on... and on... and on! This is the best value yet as we see we have 83 players still left in at week 7. Only one faller and it pains me to say it was due to Everton's inability to do a Thatcher.... "shut up shop" as they let a two goal lead slip against Birmingham. Of the 83 victors 38 owe thanks to Spurs somfortable win over Blackburn (3-1) including Paris the Dog; 21 to Chelsea's lesson to Zola's boys (4-1) and 18 for Liverpool's easy win over a very troubled Pompey. Bolton saved two humans and a guinea pig by beating Wigan (4-0) , and one player each for Man United (3-0 romp over Fulham), Arsenal (2-1 away at Hull) and believe it or not, Wolves who beat Burnley away (only a Wanderers fan would select them to win wouldn't they!). So, now it gets difficult for most of us that have used the traditional 'big guns' already. Those players who have 'gambled' on the likes of Stoke, Bolton, Portsmouth, Hull, Wolves and Liverpool may now be smiling if they've got one of the top 4 left. Best of luck everyone, Phil

Week 5 Update [10 Mar @ 12:00am]

This weeks update begins with some sad news I'm afraid. I have received news that Paris Waring is sadly no longer with us. The games first canine player is still in the Predictions competition but has not made it to the next round of life's. Paris is sending mystic messages to Geoff in the hope that he can fulfil his dying wish of lasting longer that the Guinea Pig! Of this week's games only four fell as three selected W Ham to beat Bolton who somehow won away (and failed last night miserably in Sunderland) and one because the [not-so] mighty reds couldn't get enough fight in them to beat struggling Wigan who claimed their first ever victory over Liverpool. Onto the survivors. Everton put Hull in the same bracket as Chelsea and Man United (i.e. losing to the brilliant blues) which ensured 52 players a problematic week 6 selection; Arsenal secured 29 players safety with an unconvincing win over Burnley (but did you watch the 5-0 demolition of Porto last night?). 3 went for Man United to beat Wolves meaning we still have an amazing 84 people left in. What value for money this game is turning out to be! Selections: Please get them to me by Friday 6pm (otherwise its an administrative nightmare). Now then, If you can't remember who you have picked, open up the spreadsheet on the website www.chesternomads.co.uk select Other Pages and then Premier Predictions. The sheet is always on the latest update. If you dont know the fixtures they are also on the sheet but they are also available on any sports web site! If you select early and then your team all goes down with flu. you can change up to the 6pm Friday deadline (id prefer you dont as again this is hard to control) Can you tell that I've received a few "unusual" questions this week!!!

week 4 Update [2 Mar @ 12:00am]

15 out this week as the majority went for Liverpool to overcome a poor Blackburn side at Anfield - duly dispatched sending 47 players safely through to week 5. (Clarky's happy as he's had £1 a week of excitement now!) The others sailed through with big wins for Birmingham over Wigan (what a thriller that would have been) giving 27 players the dilema of a further selection; 5 for Arsenal who I think were lucky to get a penalty v Stoke; 4 for Bolton who beat Wolves and 4 for Spurs who beat a tired looking Everton at the Lane. The best call of the day was surely Tony Peterson's selection of Portsmouth - who would have thought they'd (a) win and (b) get the win at Burnley who have been so impressive at home this season. fair play, good shout! Of those we say thanks fand goodbye to there were 7 out as Chelsea who lost in the Italian derby game before Wayne Bridge sent JT a text saying "that's how you play away fella!". -- Deany - you must be getting some stick today from your work colleagues eh? 5 more as Burnley failed at home to Pompey - quote of the day from that fixture "The Joint management committee of Dave Smith and James Wilcox is going to stick with our winning formula of picking any team that is playing Portsmouth so this weeks selection is the mighty clarets of Burnley to turn the screw on admin bound Portsmouth" sadly it wasnt to be! 3 gambled on Sunderland ending their 13 match winless run at home to the Cottagers.... did you check the form guides? I think not. There's a bit of an odd week for Week 5 as many of the planned fixtures have been moved so I'm going to allow Tuesday's and Wednesday's fixtures to make up the numbers. Spreadsheet will be updated tomorrow with full details but you can always get fixtures from the bbc.... http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/eng_prem/fixtures/default.stm selections by Friday please - no reminders this week! Cheers Phil

Week 3 Update [22 Feb @ 12:00am]

Wow! For the first time EVER we have absolutely no one going out of Premier Predictions! 103 players started the weekend and 103 players ended the weekend still in the competition. That was largely thanks to Villa's emphatic win over Burnley in the Battle of the Clarets - a 12 minute spell producing four goals sent 47 players through. Arsenal's comfortable win accounted for another 36; Chelsea's win away at Wiolves gave 11 a safe passage; Three correctly predicted the Hammers would nail [get it] Hull at home; Another three must have been gasping for breath as Stoke left it to injury time to produce the winner at troubled Pompey and finally two more through as Spurs hit Wigan for 3 adding to the 9 they scored earlier in the season. On top of that who could have missed the performance of the week from the mighty blues who beat United at their own game... played off the park and deserved winners... Whilst I recognise that Rodwell did well to come off the bench and score I did think it was ridiculous that he made Garth Crook's BBC Sports sqaud of the week... he only came on in the 88th minute. What a plonker! (that's Crook's not Rodwell !) spreadsheet available to view on www.chesternomads.co.uk select Other Pages > Prem Predictions #;;9 selections for week 4 by Friday please. I've included the Carling Cup Final just in case you want to pick either United or Villa - yes I know Im too kind! best of luck Phil

Week 2 Update [8 Feb @ 12:00am]

A quiet Derby-Day weekend as a massive 86 players saw safety in Manchester United romping to vistory against Pompey - is the new strategy bet against whoever Portsmouth are playing... if so, they're entertaining Stoke next week -fancy a shot? Also through are 13 who picked the blue half to be victorious in the Midlands derby; 3 who picked Stoke (3-0 winners over Blackburn) and 1 for Chelsea (Speedy The Guinea Pig) in the London derby Strangely that means that Speedy outlasts owner and previous winner Karen Waring who thought Sunderland would 'do' Wigan but alas no. Annette Shone also plumped for this one. 4 went for the City of manchester to beat City of Hull but Phil Brown's team did them over at the KC... (Dad's Army out along with Harry jnr, Paul Kelly and Zoe Morrey... although Im sure that was husband Rupe picking that!) and finally 2 more gone when Bolton only drew with Fulham (Katie Waring and Stewart Campbell). ps - no mention of the Mersey derby for obvious reasons hush hush! Selections please from the 103 players into week 3 (Clarky that's a third different team you need - just explaining as I know you've not been this far before!!) Cheers Phil

Week 1 Update [2 Feb @ 12:00am]

One of the quietest opening weeks we've had in Premier Predictions as only 9 players fell as the big guns fired a record 111 players through to week 2. So, assuming I get paid by everyone the pot we're playing for is £390 Man City accounted for an astonishing 61 successes after an easy win over troubled Pompey and 35 were thankful for John 'Playboy' Terry's winner for Chelsea v Burnley. 12 went for a gamblw with unpredictable Liverpool but came through unscathed and only three bet on Everton beating Wigan away (surely this was a gimme?) So, sadly onto the losers.... its a shame as of the nine players out 4 were new comers and clearly trying out the tactic of saving the big guns for later and taking a punt on Sunderland (1), Hull (4) and West Ham (4) - we've all tried that one eh! Don't be too despondent people... keep trying and get ready for game #10. This might seem like I'm rubbing salt into their wounds but they failed where pets Speedy (liverpool) and Paris (chelsea) succeeded! Cheers all Phil
