History

Pre 1980
01 Jul 2009

There has been a long tradition of football teams that have played in the village under the name of Chilcompton.

Teams representing the village can be traced back to the early part of the 20th century. Football continued through the years with a strong tradition of sons following their fathers into the side. Indeed, some members of today's teams can claim to be following fathers or grandfathers in playing for the village sides. The highpoint of this period came after the Second World War when the club, running two strong sides, won the championship of the Cheddar Valley League.

However by the late seventies adult football in the village had ceased with only one team at youth level remaining and this too ended when the team reached the end of the youth age groups.

In 1988 a small but enthusiastic group formed a new Chilcompton Football Club and joined the Bath and District League. With no facilities in the village they were forced to play at various grounds in the local area and in spite of this nomadic existence the club prospered, especially when the club joined the more local Mid Somerset League for season 1989-90.

With membership growing and subsequent promotions in 1992 and 1993 a reserve side was formed, again joining the Mid Somerset League. This side was also successful gaining promotion and in 1996, won the 1st trophies for the newly formed club - Mid Somerset Division II championship and 'Wilmot' Cup. This trophy ushered in several more years of success for the club when the 1st team won divisional cups and gained promotion to the Mid Somerset Premier League.

In 1999, the League's Golden Jubilee, Chilcompton won the Mid Somerset treble of League Championship and both major cup competitions, a feat only achieved on a handful of occasions in the proceeding fifty years. This year also saw a further growth in the club with the addition of a third adult side, again joining the Mid Somerset League. The newly formed 'A' team was formed to take players fresh from youth football and introduce them into adult soccer.

A youth section to the football club was started in Jan 1999. Originally players in the age range of 5 to 14 attended weekly training sessions which took place on Sunday afternoons. For the 1999/2000 season the youth section entered teams into the Midsomer Norton Youth League at U13 and U12 level. In addition U9 and U8 teams played friendlies against local opposition

2000s

For the start of the 2001/02 season a 'Saturday morning club' was formed concentrating on the development of youth football. This was the catalyst for an increase in playing numbers with the number of teams increasing from the initial four age groups.

For the start of the 2002-2003 season the club dramatically restructured itself, with the 1st and 2nd teams remaining as Chilcompton Football Club and the 'A' team and youth section forming the newly named Chilcompton United Football Club.

At the start of the 2005-2006 season a further restructuring of the club took place when the youth section became known as Chilcompton Sports with its own separate management structure. It was decided to move in this direction because of the rapid growth that had taken place over a relatively short period of time. This would allow links to be forged with both adult clubs and improve the opportunities for players reaching the end of the youth development process. In September 2005 an association with Coerver Coaching (Bath) was formed. Coaches were exposed to this coaching methodology which allowed the club to focus on technical skills improvement. The youth section was awarded 'Charter Club' status on the 6th February 2006.

The 2006-2007 saw the two Chilcompton Football Club sides return to the village to play their football due to the completion of the pavilion at the Bennell Sports ground. As an active supporter of the Recreation Project the Chilcompton United side had the option to move to the sports ground instead of Chilcompton Football Club's 2nd team. However they chose to remain at Ston Easton for their home matches.

Due to the number of coaches who were involved in both the youth set up and Chilcompton Football Club it was decided to also change the name of the adult club to Chilcompton Sports for the 2008/09 season.
