AFC CL 2008

Melbourne Victory 3-1 Chonburi 21st May 2008 [6 Oct @ 10:00pm]

Thompson Back With A Bang
Wednesday, 21 May 2008

Archie Thompson marked his return from injury by scoring one goal and setting up another as Melbourne Victory ensured they finished their AFC Champions League campaign with a win after defeating Chonburi 3-1 at the Telstra Dome on Wednesday. Thompson played for just half an hour but showed enough to suggest to national coach Pim Verbeek, who was in the crowd, that he is fit and ready should the Dutchman need him during the Socceroos four World Cup qualifiers in June.

Ney Fabiano gave the visitors the lead after 54 minutes, capitalising on a Kevin Muscat error before the Melbourne skipper atoned two minutes later with a goal of his own. Thompson then gave Victory the lead with an excellent solo effort in the 66th minute and then ten minutes later he set-up Carlos Hernandez for the third and final goal. Teenage goalkeeper Mitchell Langerak was making his first start for Victory in the ACL and was called on twice early in the game. He first parried Pipob On-Mo's header and then a few minutes later produced a fine save from a well-taken free kick from Arthit Suntornphit which looked to be heading into the top corner. His opposite number Kosin Hathairattanakool was also busy in the first 45 minutes, producing excellent saves from Rody Vargas' close-range header and powerful shots from Danny Allsopp and Tom Pondeljak.

A catastrophic defensive mistake from Muscat created the opening for Fabiano to score the opening goal in the 54th minute. Steven Pace knocked the ball back to his skipper who was dispossessed in the box by the Brazilian who then smashed the ball past Langerak and into the net. But Muscat made amends immediately when from a Billy Celeski corner, the Chonburi defence failed to clear and the ball ended with Muscat facing an empty net. He made no mistake and the scores were level again within two minutes. Having missed two months of football with a knee injury, Thompson made a big impression in the game and was too quick for the Chonburi defence just after the hour mark, running onto an Allsopp through ball, rounding the approaching Kosin and slotting the goal from a tight angle.

And it wasn't long before Victory had their third as Thompson charged down the right before delivering superbly for Hernandez, who coolly made it 3-1 after 76 minutes.

Chonburi 0-2 Gamba Osaka 7th May 2008 [6 Oct @ 10:00pm]

Gamba Go Through
Wednesday 7th May 2008

Gamba Osaka secured their place in the knockout phase of the AFC Champions League on Wednesday evening with a 2-0 victory over Chonburi at Supachalasai Stadium, but the J.League side were made to work for the win. Needing only a draw to progress, second-half goals from substitute Masato Yamazaki and Lucas earned Akira Nishino's side their berth in the last eight, where they will join compatriots Urawa Reds, who qualify automatically as defending champions. The victory moves Gamba on to 13 points from their five games in Group G and avenges the surprise draw Chonburi picked up in Osaka in the first match of the campaign back in March, which threatened to derail the Japanese side's hopes before they began. Then, a late equaliser from Lucas spared Gamba's blushes and the Thai champions proved that result was no fluke with a battling effort in front of their own fans.

As early as the third minute Ney Fabiano caused havoc in the Gamba defence when he cut onto his right foot, only for his weak shot from just inside the area to be comfortably collected by Naoki Matsuyo. Five minutes later Gamba thought they had scored when Satoshi Yamaguchi had the ball in the net, only for his effort to be ruled out for a foul. Pipob On-mo and Fabiano both had attempts on goal for Chonburi before the end of the first half while Brazilian Bare hit the Thai side's crossbar with his shot on the turn in injury time. Bare went close again in the 62nd minute with a shot that went across the face of Kosin Hathairattanakool's goal and two minutes later the Thai national team goalkeeper was beaten. Yasuda scampered down the right before clipping in a cross that Yamazaki - who had only just come on in place of Ryuji Bando - headed beyond Kosin, beating the keeper at his near post.

The goal deflated the home side and, 12 minutes later, the game was over as a contest when Lucas charged into the penalty area unmarked to thump Akira Kaji's cross home with a right-footed volley.

Chonburi 2-2 Chunnam Dragons 23rd April 2008 [6 Oct @ 10:00pm]

Pipob Pops Up To Save Chonburi
Wednesday 23rd April 2008

Substitute Pipob On-mo bagged a brace as Chonburi came from two goals down to claim a 2-2 draw with Chunnam Dragons in their AFC Champions League Group G encounter at Supachalasai Stadium on Wednesday. Chunnam opened the scoring after just five minutes when Jeong Jun-yeon, who was sent-off soon after, fired home from inside the box. The Koreans then doubled their advantage two minutes after the break when Kim Mung-woon found the back of the net with a low strike from the edge of the area.

However, Chonburi pulled a goal back after 56 minutes when Pipob headed home from close range and the same player snatched a point for the hosts after 88 minutes when he beat keeper Yeom Dong-gyun from distance. However, after group leaders Gamba Osaka's 2-0 victory over Melbourne Victory, the result means both sides stand on the brink of elimination as Chonburi trail the J. League outfit by five points and Chunnam six with just two games to go. Chonburi started the better of the two teams and Stephane Baga had the ball in the net but it was disallowed for hand ball. And the hosts soon fell behind when Jeong found the back of the net from inside the area to give the K-League side an early advantage.

Chonburi looked for an instant response and Yeom did well to deny Baga after 11 minutes before the latter fed Arthit Suntornphit, but his long-range effort was repelled by the Chunnam keeper. The Thai League champions were then handed a boost after 25 minutes when Chunnam were reduced to 10 men when goalscorer Jeong picked up a second yellow card. And they came agonizingly close to an equaliser seven minutes before the interval when striker Ney Fabiano De Oliveira rattled the bar with a header. Brazilians Andriano Pereira and Victor Simoes went close for Chunnam as the Koreans held onto their slender advantage up to half-time.

Chunnam then doubled their lead two minutes into the second period when Kim rifled home from 18 yards before Chonburi grabbed themselves a lifeline in the 56th minute when Arthit crossed from the left flank and substitute Pipob headed home. The home side poured forward in search of an equaliser but found Chunnam keeper Yeom blocking their way on almost every occasion. But two minutes from time, Chonburi finally found a way past the Dragons custodian as Pipob's long-range strike flew into the back of the net.

Chunnam Dragons 1-0 Chonburi 9th April 2008 [6 Oct @ 10:00pm]

Sub Victor Wakes Sleeping Dragons
Wednesday 9th April 2008

A spectacular last-minute free-kick from substitute Victor Simoes De Oliviera gave Chunnam Dragons a 1-0 win over Chonburi and their first points in Group G of the AFC Champions League. With the game heading for a goalless draw, Chunnam were looking at an early exit from the continental competition until the Brazilian stepped up at the death to condemn the visitors to their first defeat of the campaign. It was a little harsh on Chonburi who battled well in the strong wind and heavy rain, with the weather ensuring chances were at a premium.

The visitors adapted quicker to the conditions however and should have been ahead inside two minutes when a swirling free-kick from the right had goalkeeper Yeom Dong-hyun flapping but Natatorn Phanrit somehow headed over from one yard out at the far post. After the early scare, Chunnam, who sit in bottom spot of the K-league after four games of the season, began to put the group leaders under pressure and their first real chance came after 16 minutes. A long ball from defence found Kim Myung-woon at the edge of the area but the midfielder shot straight at Kosin Hathairattanakool in the Chonburi goal. Ten minutes later Lee Kyu-ro blasted over from 10 yards after Yoo Hong-youl had headed a Kim Chi-woo cross back across the face of goal.

Chonburi, playing into the wind, had been penned back in their own half but almost scored on the half-hour mark. A left-sided cross from Natthaphong Samana was headed against a defender by Ekaphan Inthasen at the far post but the striker reacted quickly to volley the loose ball goalward from close range but the Chunnam goalkeeper was equal to the challenge. Five minutes before the break, Chunnam came within inches of breaking the deadlock. Koh Ki-goo squared the ball to Lee just inside the area and the teenager's low shot was pushed onto the inside of the right post by the Thai international goalkeeper and the ball bounced across the face of the Chonburi goal before being cleared to safety.

Six minutes after the restart, Chonburi wasted a chance to take the lead when Ekaphan was released down the right and quickly entered the Chunnam penalty area but with the goal at his mercy, he passed instead to the far post where Natthaphong failed to make contact. As the game entered the final phase, Chonburi seemed more content to maintain the status quo and rarely looked troubled. With 20 minutes remaining, an overhead pass from Koh Ki-goo found Song Jung-hyun in the area but the midfielder's shot on the turn only found the side-netting.

The game, and Chunnam's campaign was almost up, when the hosts were awarded a free-kick in a central position just outside the Thai area in the 90th minute. Victor's left-footed shot curled over the top of the wall and into the top right of the Chonburi goal.

Chonburi 3-1 Melbourne Victory 19th March 2008 [5 Oct @ 10:00pm]

Super Sub Baga Bags Victory
Wednesday 19th March 2008

Substitute Stephane Baga came on to score two late goals as Thai Premier League champions Chonburi picked up their first win in the AFC Champions League with a stunning 3-1 victory over Australian side Melbourne Victory on Wednesday. The Cameroonian forward came on with 20 minutes remaining at Supachalasai National Stadium and rifled home a spectacular shot from 30 metres in the 79th minute to restore Chonburi's lead after Daniel Allsopp had cancelled out Fabiano's first-half opener.

The Thais were reduced to ten men with five minutes remaining when Arthit Suntornphit was dismissed after receiving his second caution but Baga settled the matter deep into stoppage time when he drove into the box before sliding the ball past goalkeeper Michael Theoklitos. Chonburi moved to the top of Group G on goal difference, ahead of Japanese side Gamba Osaka who beat Chunnam Dragons of Korea 4-3 earlier on Wednesday.

The opening 20 minutes were uneventful but the game sparked to life midway through the first half when Fabiano launched a shot from the edge of the Melbourne box that flew just over the crossbar. On 36 minutes, Fabiano rose high to knock down the ball into the path of Chonburi skipper Pipob On-Mo who surged past the last defender before firing a weak effort that failed to trouble Theoklitos. The deadlock would be broken though a minute before half-time when a deep cross by Arthit picked out an unmarked Fabiano, who rose unchallenged to send a looping header past Theoklitos.

Melbourne should have drawn level in stoppage time at the end of the firs thalf as Claudio Caceres squared the ball across the face of goal to an unattended Archie Thompson who completely missed the ball from six yards out. The Australian side drew level two minutes later when a cross from the left flank by Matthew Kemp was turned in by Allsopp in the six-yard box. The game turned physical and Arthit was lucky to receive only a yellow card in the 65th minute for a lunging challenge on Blagoja Celeski.

Fabiano nearly restored Chonburi's lead two minutes later with a surging run that took him into Melbourne box where he unleashed a shot that took a deflection before coming back off the right post. Baga came on in the 70th minute and took only nine minutes to make an impact with a superb strike. The Cameroonian gained possession in the Melbourne half and unleashed a left-footed screamer from 30 metres that flew into the top left corner ofthe Melbourne net giving Theoklitos no chance. Chonburi held to hold on in the final few minutes with only 10 men when Arthit was needlessly dismissed after being shown a second yellow card for time-wasting but the best chance that Melbourne could muster was a looping header by Allsopp that flew harmlessly over the crossbar.

With the Australian side pushing for an equaliser, Baga caught them on thecounter-attack deep into stoppage time, advancing into the Melbourne box before coolly slotting the ball past Theoklitos.

AFC Champions League - Group G Supachalasai National Stadium
Wednesday 19th March, 2008
Chonburi 3-1 Melbourne Victory
Prior to the start of the 2008 AFC CL tournament nobody had really given Chonburi much of a chance. The vast majority of so called experts had pretty much written us off before a ball had been kicked. As far as they were concerned, we were only there to make up the numbers. However, a battling performance in Japan, where we came within a few seconds of beating favourites and eventual winners, Gamba Osaka, had made people take us a bit more seriously.

The match against Melbourne was to be our first home match in the competition and the excitement to the run up was palpable. It was the main topic of conversation whenever and wherever Chonburi fans would gather. As our own ground, The Chonburi Municipal Stadium, was deemed unsuitable for staging AFC games the club had taken the bold decision to use Supachalasai in BKK for our home ties. This meant an early start for most of us and the fleet of buses, mini-buses, cars and pick up trucks that turned the late afternoon motorway two shades of blue was a sight to behold.

The atmosphere outside the stadium was fantastic, as a large crowd gathered around the newly established Fan Zone. The small, but friendly, band of Aussies who had made the trip were mixing freely with the locals and revelling in the occasion. The ones I spoke to on the night had only expected a turn out of a couple of hundred and were genuinely impressed by the throng of good natured supporters that had greeted them with open arms. Songs were sung, drums were banged, horns were blown, shirts and scarves were swapped and beer was shared, as all language barriers came crashing down in a display of public goodwill.

Inside the ground, the attendance had reached the 10,000 mark as the travelling Chonburi faithful were joined by Bangkokians and fans representing many other Thai clubs. This wasn't just Chonburi v Melbourne. This was Thailand v Australia! The match itself certainly lived up to its billing. Chonburi played some delightful football that had the physically stronger visitors chasing shadows. Baga scored one of the best goals you'll ever see and, despite going down to ten men in the closing stages, Chonburi emerged triumphant.
Two games played and we were unbelievably top of the group.

After the game, the Melbourne fans were gracious in defeat and many of them came into our section to congratulate us and bid us farewell. As with any great night, none of us wanted it to end. There were still hundreds of Chonburians singing and dancing outside the stadium long after the final whistle had been blown. To their credit, those very pundits who had been so quick to dismiss us were unified in their praise. Chonburi had arrived on the big stage in some style!

Gamba Osaka 1-1 Chonburi 12th March 2008 [5 Oct @ 10:00pm]

Lucas Leveller Flattens Chonburi
Wednesday 12th March 2008

Brazilian striker Lucas scored a last-gasp equaliser as Gamba Osaka eked out a 1-1 draw with Thailand's Chonburi FC in Group G of the AFC Champions League on Wednesday evening. Arthit Suntornphit looked to have given Chonburi a surprise win and all three points when he slotted home from close range in the 58th minute after an impressive run by Brazilian striker Ney Fabiano had torn the home defence apart.

But Lucas struck from close range deep into injury time to give Akira Nishino's team a share of the points after the Nabisco Cup holders had dominated but were unable to find a way past the Thai defence. Gamba striker Bare went close in the 13th minute when his header crashed against the crossbar and Japan international Yasuhito Endo saw his free-kick pushed around the post by Kosin Hathairattanakool six minutes later, who also denied Shinichi Terada just before the break.

The teams went in level at half time but, after several near misses at the other end by Gamba, Chonburi hit the Japanese on the break to stun the home support. Ney Fabiano tore down the right flank before cutting into the penalty area and past Hiroki Mizumoto before hitting a shot that was blocked by a despairing lunge from Hideo Hashimoto. However, the ball broke to the unmarked Arthit and he stroked the ball home with ease to stun the home support.

With a major shock on the cards, Gamba threw everything forward but, despite the onslaught, Chonburi managed to deny their more illustrious counterparts for more than 30 minutes. Thai national team goalkeeper Kosin outstanding between the posts, denying Lucas in the 65th minute and keeping out a pair of efforts from Bare in the final 10 minutes. But eventually the Japanese side found a way through to take a share of the points and spare their own blushes. The Chonburi defence was unable to properly clear a lofted ball into the penalty area and former FC Tokyo striker Lucas capitalised at the far post, sliding his shot home in the fourth minute of injury time to break the Thai side's hearts.
