GJUROVSKI, PHICHIPONG PUT KIRINS SIX POINTS CLEAR

Muang Thong United moved six points clear at the top of the Thailand Premier League standings after a crucial 2-0 win against former champions Chonburi FC at a packed SCG stadium last night.

Two late strikes from Macedonian midfielder Mario Gjurovski (82nd) and Phichitphong Cheuichiu (89th) secured all three points for the league leaders.

Muang Thong now have 27 points from 11 games, six ahead of second-placed BEC Tero Sasana who have 21 points from 10 games.

Kirins captain Datsakorn Thonglao missed a great chance to put his team ahead early in the first half after his shot was denied by Chonburi's Thailand goalkeeper Sinthaweechai Hathairattanakool.

Pipob On-mo also came close to scoring for the Sharks, but his shot went just inches off the target. Chonburi had another good chance two minutes before the interval when Suttinun Phukhom fired a shot over the crossbar from a Therdsak Chaiman cornerkick.

Muang Thong took control of the game in the second half as they looked for the opening while the Sharks resorted to counter-attacking. The plan nearly paid off after Diouf Bireme but his shot was cleared by Panupong Wongsa.

A free-kick from Gjurovski in the 82nd proved to be the turning point of the match when Sinthaweechai appeared to mis-judge the flight of the ball which floated into the net without hitting any player.

Muang Thong continued to press for the second goal and it was Phichitphong who put the game beyond doubt with a fierce from the edge of the area to make it 2-0 to the hosts.
