CBI FC started as a drunken conversation between several now squad members at the wedding of Ian and Nicky Riddle in the summer of 2005, and a very nice day it was to. The idea was to take our group of around 10 friends and by making some additions to the squad we would have a team worthy of competing in any Sunday league.
Dan Martin the self appointed club secretary went about recruiting a Manager and found 2 willing and able Managers in the shape of Dave Wigley & Martin Lacey (snr). Dan Martin, Dave, & Mart (snr) then approached the Clifton Bridge Inn (Ponda) for Sponsorship. They kindly agreed to supply Chip Cobs and a base for our post-match watering hole.
Player trials were arranged for June 2006, the trails lasted several weeks and at its height had around 40 players competing for positions, with at least 20 of them able to run in a straight line and kick a ball.
Then came the arduous task of raising enough funds for a kit and signing on fees. Through raffles, players & managers donations we finally scraped enough money together to buy an ill-fitting kit and pay for registration. The squad was finally cut to 18 members and a pre-season schedule was arranged, with friendlies against: Southbank, Trent City, DAC and AC Electrical.
Pre-season friendlies and several hammerings out of the way we approached our first season already having had several squad member changes and the amount of internal arguments that would last the script writers of Coronation Street for another 6 years.
Overall the first season was a success finishing 4th in a tricky league and making some extremely valuable additions to the squad over the season.
In 2006/07, Dan Murphy took the prize for Players Player of the year, Danny Toplis took the prize for Managers Player of the year and Dan Martin took the Golden Boot award with 17 goals.
There was also some wooden spoon awards too. Danny Toplis won the own goal of the season award, Marco Paolini took home the slicer of the year award, & Ian Chambers took the Moan of the season award. Well done lads!
