History of Clipstone Welfare F.C |
Formed in 1928 they began life under the name of Clipstone Combine, with their home ground near to the main Mansfield Road in Clipstone. They also played in the same Colliry Alliance league as Clipstone Colliery.
The club then moved to Baulker Lane & registered under the name of Clipstone Boys Brigade. Eventually they became Clipstone Welfare & began playing in the Mansfield & District League, they also went on to play in the Sutton & Skegby League & Nottingham Spartan League, where they achieved their fisrt major success.
In the season 1955/56 they won the treble of Spartan League Champions, League Cup Winners & Nott's County F.A. Intermediate Cup Winners. They then progressed to the Nott's Alliance League, with promotion came a new home, which has remained their home to the present day, 'The Lido Ground'.
During the 1970's the club achieved great success winning the Senior Division Championship & Senior Cup in three consecutive seasons, from 1972/73 to 1974/75. The season 1974/75 saw the introduction of The F.A. Challenge Vase, in the inaugural year Clipstone won through to the second round after an epic battle against a Senior Leicestershire outfit called Midland Athletic, losing in the second round to Friar Lane Old Boys.
The Clubs next term of success came a decade later in the 1985/86 season which saw the Club progress to become Nottinghamshire County F.A. Senior Cup Winners. The remainder of the 1980's saw little further success with the Club repeatedly finishing in the top half of the table.
The 1990's started more promisingly & in the 1992/93 season success was once again on the front door step of Clipstone Welfare F.C. The League Championship came to Clipstone under the Realms of John Slater & Carl Hanson, in the same season they also finished runners-up in the Nott's Senior Cup. This eventful season also saw the Clubs best run in The F.A. Challenge Vase, going out in the third round to Hinkley Athletic. With such a good season behind them it was going to be difficult to emulate this the following season. Emulate they didn't but better it they did! They became TREBLE WINNERS in the 1993/94 season capturing The Nott's Alliance Championship, The Senior Cup & The Nott's F.A. Senior Cup.
This resulted in promotion to The Central Midlands Premier Division, in the inaugural season the Club took the Championship by 5 clear points, & took runners up spot in the County Senior Cup.
Ground upgrades prevented the club from gaining promotion & the chance did not arrive again until the end of the1996/97 season when once again they stormed to the top of the championship table. The resrves side also won their championship making it a memorable season for all.
With all the required ground upgrades completed this enabled the first XI to gain entry into the Supreme Division & the Resrves into the Reserve Premier Division, where both teams currently play.
The 2004/05 season saw a change of management at the Club which had been in decline for the previous 2 seasons. Dave Mason was promoted from Resrve Team Manager, supported by Simon Tunnicliffe, they set about revamping both the playing staff & style of play. It was a hard season for all at the Club, but much needed changes were put in place throughout the season with new faces coming in both on the field & off.
The Club began the 2004/05 season in a much healthier position, but a poor start saw the resignation of Dave & Simon. Chris Bowskill, the 3rd member of the management team took the reins.
The season almost finished on a high after reaching the Floodlit Cup Final but losing 2-0 to League Champions Dunkirk. A final league placing of 10th was viewed as a disappointment in the end, with more consistency a higher place in the table should have been well within reach.
Season 2005/06 saw manager Chris Bowskill resign after 2 months due to work commitments.
Player Darron Thorpe took over the playing side & after several games was offered & accepted the post of manager, in his first week he persuaded Dave Mason to return to the Club as his assistant.
A final league position of 13th & losing in the Semi-Final of the League Cup was viewed as a poor season & once again the lack of consistency let the club down.
2006/2007 saw improvements in results, with a top 5 finish and winning the Phoenix Trophies Floodlit Cup. Beating League runners up Barton Town Old Boys 3-1 in the Final at Southwell City's Memorial ground.
At the end of the season the 1st team manager and his assistant resigned. After advertising the post, it was decided to appoint player Brendan Sweeney the position + Dean Marrows as his assistant, both duly accepting.
