Today we faced Santos 92 in our final League game of the season. Santos needed to win to take the division 2 title, a win for us would have meant possible third place (depending on other results).
To be fair this game meant more to the opposition and it showed. We were under pressure from the start and struggled with the constant attacks on our goal. We were soon 1-0 down as our off side line failed to stand up to scrutiny. As the pressure on our defence increased every ball that we cleared seemed to fall nicely for Santos who were hungry for success. Before we knew it we were 2-0 behind and then 3-0. We pulled one back when a corner from Tweedy was flicked goal bound by centre back Phil Homewood but a clearance from the line denied Phil his chance. However, Captain Ian Holloway followed up to score our one and only goal. Two more goals from the home side sent us into half time trailing 5-1.
The second half saw a better effort from the Corp until an injury to our Captain saw a delay in proceedings. As play was reinstated we were still asleep allowing Santos a quick goal. We never really got back into the swing of things after this and Santos were allowed one more goal to give them a 7-1 victory and the League title. A second yellow card in 25 years for Manager and Secretary Tony Whitehead pretty much summed up a bad day at the Office!
Not the best game we’ve ever played but like I said; Santos had more to gain from the victory and they were by far the better team on the day. Well done to Gavin Hussain whose hard work earned him the man of the match vote followed closely by the consistent Amin Lane.
And so another season comes to an end (baring a couple of friendlies). This was my 25th season with the Club and I can honestly say that I am proud to have been part of it for so long. After winning the fourth division last season and being promoted by two divisions we had a good go at the League this season. We were a bit slow in starting but once we got into the swing of things we were able to give a good account of ourselves in most games. I would like to say a special thanks to Norman and John for their support and back up throughout the season and of course to everyone involved with the Club. Well done guys you are a good bunch and I hope you are as proud of this Club as I am.
