United followed up their heroic national cup victory in Sunderland last week by ending their season on a high; with a 6-0 thrashing of Surbiton ensuring their third place finish. With injuries to key players United had to put a couple of square pegs in round holes but the result didn’t look in doubt from the off, as Luke Whiteman gave them and early lead after a series of surging passing moves by United’s mobile midfield.
When Anthony Johnson swung in a corner that evaded the Surbiton defence and ended up in the back of the net the result never looked in doubt.United were quickest to the ball and moved it around with ease as Surbiton struggled to get into the game.Further goals from Whiteman and James Garraghan gave United a 4-0 lead on 30 minutes.A period of Surbiton pressure followed, as United eased up, and keeper Dave Walter showed his quality as he saved a brilliant goal bound volley and player manager Peter Stephens cleared a header from the line to preserve United’s fourth clean sheet in a row.
United brought on Jake Weeks for the second half and United continued to dominate, two more goals from Garraghan and top scorer Graeme Mitchell sealing the win.Dave Jordan made a rare appearance up front and could have grabbed two goals in as many minutes, as he saw one ball canon off the bar and another drop agonisingly wide.
United take on Mansfield Athletic in the National Cup at the Valley next month and on this form are optimistic of bringing the silverware home.
