Match Review for 22.02.09
3 - 0 Loss to Hillfield Swifts
Hi Guys,
A big change from the last time we played Hillfield Swifts when we were beaten 5 - 0 but could have been a lot more! A great amount of character and determination was shown on Sunday with everyone competing throughout the match. To a man, everyone's head stayed up even though we lost an early goal on 4 minutes. That was brilliant for Stuart and me to see and showed real team spirit. Well done.
There must be something in the water in Fife because I still can't get over the height of some of their team and that played a big part in their first goal. A cracking corner that was met well and buried into the back of the net from the biggest player on the pitch! What I must say is that Tom in particular did a great job after the first corner in marking the boy out the game at future corners. Whilst I am on the subject of defending the full backs were great on Sunday, Cammy C's concentration and runs were fantastic and Paul was turning up everywhere!
The midfield played really tight getting the balls out to the front men. Murray and Matthew saw lots of the ball and made good runs forward with Ben and Tom breaking up the play. One move saw Matthew go on a smashing run, pass the ball to Liam who had a good shot across the goal from the right-hand side which was saved well by the goal keeper.
Kick outs are a touch mixed just now and are sometimes giving us a little bit of trouble at the back. The defence and midfield need to be alive to this and be ready to deal with it. Unfortunately on 25 minutes we lost a goal in these circumstances. This is something we can start working on when we get back outside training again and perhaps we can do some practice before the games.
The second half saw some of the best fighting spirit I have seen from the team all season. With a touch more luck and a little more composure we could have scored about 4 goals. First up on 11 minutes, Matthew was brought down heavily and a quick substitution was made to get our expert free kick taker on! Murray took a cracking free kick which broke loose and was so nearly turned in by Graham. That set us going because straight away Robbie had a shot which just went wide of the goal before another move down the right found Graham in space on the goal keeper. Robbie then had another run with his shot saved by the keeper this time. All of this action in the space of 4 or 5 minutes!
Hillfield took some encouragement from this and started to put us under more pressure again. On 20 minutes, we didn't quite manage to clear our lines and a long range effort sneaked into the corner to make it 3 - 0. I know it might not be pretty, but we do need to start clearing the ball out quickly, making sure we get a good distance on the kick. It might not be total football and ultra silky but let's start worrying about that when we are winning games. Clear any danger first and get the whole defence moving out to relieve the pressure!
We have a number of challenging games coming up with the next two against Hutchison Vale followed by Leith Athletic. Stuart and I know that if you show the same commitment as Sunday we will get something out of these games. A much improved performance this week, well done to you all.
Stuart & John
