In our last game of the season, we were up against Killamarsh Ladies whom we had recently played against on Tuesday of the previous week. The game had been moved to Gosforth onto the all-weather surface. The atmospheric conditions also were very different, there was a howling gale, lashing rain and what felt like sub-zero temperature. Due to catching a particular virulent form of virus, I chose to watch the game from the balcony under the shelter of the fascia’s & gutters.
The game kicked off at 12.06 and it took a while before things started to happen. After 16 minutes, Town were awarded a corner on the left and Jane Barnett delivered a good ball into the danger area. However, Town couldn’t get anything on it and the ball was cleared. On 22 minutes, we made our first change Geraldine Eardley coming off to be replaced by Kerry Rosenthal. In the 27th minute of the game, Killamarsh were awarded a corner on the left. The ball in went to the Killamarsh No. 7 who somehow got her leg up high above her head and looped the ball into the back left hand corner of the net facing away from goal. What a good goal!
The game kicked off again at 1.10 and the crowd were already looking forward to getting back into the warm of the bar. At the start of the second half, Geraldine Eardley was back on and Kerry Rosenthal was off. Killamarsh were coming more into the game and the result of this was an upswing in the number of corners they were getting. Charlotte Crowley was injured in the 65 minute and was replaced by Kerry Rosenthal. Kerry had been back on again for only a short time, when she had Town’s first shot on goal after good work down the left by Geraldine Eardley in the sixty seventh minute. In the 76th minute, Town conceded a poor second goal after a Town defender was robbed of the ball on the edge of the area and the Killamarsh player put the ball into the bottom left corner of the net. With around 7 minutes to go Charlotte Crowley came back on with Maddy Wood making way.
After three minutes of injury time, the game ended and everybody went inside. When the players came upstairs, many of them were still shivering. I must commend them for a good game and the way they tried to execute the coach’s game plan under very trying conditions. The team only lost to a wonder goal and with the other coming from a defensive error.
