Saturday 9th November marked a low point in the current season when, due to a lack of numbers, we were forced to concede the points from the Casuals’ scheduled game at home to Bluebell Nafferton in East Riding County League Division 4.
As a result of this the club faces a League fine and the Casuals will now be one forfeited game away from automatic relegation to Division 5.
The Committee must now decide how best to address the current situation. Player shortages are happening on a weekly basis; this in spite of having over fifty registered at ER County League level.
In addition to the current struggle to meet our obligations playing-wise, the Committee are also faced with increased financial commitments.
The following five areas are of particular concern:
The Club currently has £300 outstanding in unpaid fines across all three teams. This is completely unacceptable, especially as some fines date back to last season. All players can check what they owe via the website’s Club Disciplinary section.
2) Christmas Draw & Race Night
The Christmas Draw & Race Night (Sat 14th Dec) is one of our main fundraising events and should be supported by ALL club members. This can be done beforehand by taking and selling Draw tickets, providing and/or acquiring prizes for the draw, the purchase of horses (at £2 each) and obviously by attending the event and having a flutter or two. So far, the response to each of these activities has been poor.
3) Sporting Dinner 2014
It may seem a long way off (June 2014) but the Presentation Night Dinner at The Northfield Club (at which Dean Windass is the guest speaker) is another major fundraising event in the club’s calendar. To ensure no player or club member misses out on a ticket (priced £25 each) we have closed the event to corporate buyers until the New Year and in addition set up a payment plan to enable members to reserve their places well in advance. Yet the response has again been poor.
4) Eastenders 100 Club
The 100 Club is a long-running scheme that has served the club well but only due to mainly to the support of those OUTSIDE the club. It is another scheme that would work far better if supported by ALL players – and this is one scheme that gives you several chances to win your money back. All we ask is a £10 annual fee which entitles you to entry into ten monthly draws at which there are three cash prizes per draw. Again, support at player level is poor.
5) Player Sponsorship
The Player sponsorship scheme is another one currently failing to yield anywhere near its maximum return. And again this is down to lack of support by the players. All you need to do is obtain £10 kit sponsorship for the current season, for which in return the sponsor receives a mention in each home match programme. This sponsor can be family, friends or business and with over 50 players registered this could potentially bring in at least £500 but again ONLY IF FULLY SUPPORTED by the members.
You can perhaps see from the above just why the Management Committee are becoming so concerned by the direction in which things appear to be moving.
Our aim is to continue fielding three Saturday teams for as long as we feel it is sustainable both on and off the field. Recent evidence - and the apparent apathy among the ranks - would suggest that this may not be for too much longer.
Therefore, on behalf of the Management Committee, I am asking for your full support NOW in helping us address the above issues.
If we are to avert the prospect of dropping one of our teams and successfully see this season through with First Team, Reserves & Casuals in place, we must start pulling together both on and off the field.
The Management Committee have always strove to encourage onward progress. We are committed to continue taking Easington United Association Football Club forward.
