| So near, yet so far! |
The 2006/07 season saw Eccleston compete in the St Helens Combination Division One after being relegated from the Premier Division the season before.
United were motivated by bouncing back into the Premier at the first time of asking but knew it was going to be tough.
The fact is that Div One is a very competitive league to get out of. There are a number of teams who can play very good football and other teams who are not quite as good technically but are very fit and will press you for 90 minutes.
Most of the games this season have been decided by just one goal – unfortunately United were on the wrong end of a lot of score lines!
Even mistakes at this level that should not be made get punished and this basically sums up this season along with a lack of consistency.
If we can manage to get a level consistency week-in, week-out then I’m sure next season we will end up at the top end of the league and not the bottom.
But it’s not all been doom and gloom there have been a number of positives as well from this season. Firstly – Ashley Stone, who contacted us through the website and came down as a Goalkeeper. At only 19 and making his debut in an ‘Open-age’ league he has shown a fantastic attitude and is developing nicely. Used for the first time in January as an emergency striker and has not looked back since by playing most of the second half of the season as a forward. His energy and eagerness has rattled many defenders and he will be a great asset if we can nurture his talent and ability. The highlight was his goal celebration 'Back Flip' when he scored his 1st ever goal against Junction FC. Brilliant!
Andrew Lamb and Anthony Wilson who had a couple of seasons out due to work commitments have come back and never looked out of place. The legs may have lost a bit of pace but the football brain and positioning has brilliant from these two players.
It was disappointing to lose in two Cup Semi-Finals but they were a great distraction from the league. Both games came with players being injured or unavailable and I’m sure on another day with a full squad to pick from we could have got to at least one Final. But we can strive to go one better next year.
