Report

This Section B League Cup 1/4 final started at a blistering pace as straight from the kick off Edinburgh City Colts fashioned a flowing move on the left with Callum Burns delivering the ball across the box only for the inrushing Chris Graham to place his shot inches past the post with the Fernieside keeper stranded. A minute later Fernieside were awarded a dubious free kick on half way right side. Blake Anderson the Edinburgh City Colts keeper who went on to produce a fantastic Man of Match performance, collected the cross and tried to start a quick counter attack but the strong wind blowing down the pitch held the ball up and it fell to the feet of a Fernieside midfielder who hit a speculative first time shot and with the wind behind the ball flew high into the net from 35yards. 1-0.

Although this shocked City Colts it did not stop them trying to play their passing game in the extremely windy conditions which produced several quality chances but were unable to convert. That was until the 20th minute when the ever reliable Nick O-Donnell played a through ball from defence which Scott Hume flicked on for Chris Graham to run onto and he placed the ball over the advancing keeper from 20yards for the equaliser 1-1. This was no more than Colts deserved and the frustration in the Ferniedie team frequently spilled over resulting in several bookings and what should have been a red card 15 mins into the game for a defender raising both hands to a Colts player. However it was Scott Hume of City Colts who was sent off for venting his frustration at the referee for the continuous rough treatment he was receiving from the Fernieside defence. As a result Colts had to play the remaining 15 mins of the first hallf with ten men. Halftime 1-1.

As the 2nd half progressed City Colts were playing as if they had the one man advantage instead of Fernieside and still kept trying to play their passing game with everyone in the side working extremely hard. With the wind now behind Colts they were still creating chances but it was a free kick that brought them the lead. From half way on the left Liam O-Donnel hit a fantastic ball into the box where Chris Graham controlled the ball with one touch and with his second touch drilled the ball into the net !!!! 1-2.
Soon after Fernieside were reduced to ten men and with City Colts dominating and limiting the opposition to very few openings they should have put the game to bed as they hit the woodwork, missed a penalty and then with ten minutes to go Justin Thompson picked up a pass just inside the Colts half and proceeded to beat five Fernieside players on his way towards the goal but could not find the finish his play deserved. Full time 1-2.

Another fantastic team/squad effort (all three subs playing their part) from City Colts which puts them into the Semi final of the League Cup!!!!
