ELMDEN ROVERS YOUTH FOOTBALL CLUB |
Elmden Rovers was formed in 1976 by Les Pepperell. At the time there was only one other youth team in the area (Clacton United). Les felt that there were enough good players in the area to support a second youth club. So he entered an under 12's team in the Colchester and District Youth League in 1976, as Elmden Rovers Youth. He named the team after the road he lived in (Elmden Court).
Unforunately Les was only able to see the emergence of the club for two years as he died unexpectedly at the early age of 49.
The Elmden Rovers Youth teams moved to the Essex & Suffolk Youth League for two seasons, as only a limited number of teams could be included in the Colchester league at that time. They then returned to the Colchester & District Youth League and have remained there ever since.
Mick Smart took over as chairman of Elmden Rovers after Les's death until the mid 1980's when a succession of keen and able parents came forward to run the club and this situation continues to this day.
The club grew in members and had youth teams in every age group and eventually a mens team was formed under the guidance of Dave Southern. He ran a Saturday mens and a Saturday mens reserves and a Sunday mens team in the Colchester League. The first Saturday mens team were very successful in the Colchester League. The Sunday mens team established itself in the Clacton and District League in 1992, and is still going strong. Winning the League Cup in 2006 as well as on previous occasions.
Many people of all ages can recall their years playing for Elmden Rovers and look forward to reading any reports and success that the club achieves today. Some players have gone on to higher levels of football and we hope that this continues for many years to come.
Les formed the club to give the boys of the Clacton area the opportunity to enjoy the sport and the personal rewards that go with it. Due to Les's enthusiasm hundreds of local boys have benefited from being members of Elmden Rovers FC.
