Sport Guildford Awards 2006
Monday 3 July
Griffiths Lecture Theatre, University of Surrey
The 3rd annual Sport Guildford Awards were once again held at the Griffiths Lecture Theatre at the University of Surrey on Monday 3 July. The evening was a great success with many of Guildford borough’s sporting finest present.
The evening was hosted by Peter Gordon, from Eagle Radio, and included an exciting speech from the Mayor, Angela Gunning. During her speech, the Mayor launched a brand new Award which will be available from next year as part of the Sport Guildford Awards evening; Sport for All Award. There will be no award but instead a grant of £1,000 will be provided to the club or individual who demonstrates commitment and successful development of engaging ordinarily excluded groups to sport, i.e. those with a disability, those from deprived backgrounds, ethic minorities etc. This funding has come from Sport Guildford’s successful Sport for All days held at the Spectrum in October of each year.
Individuals and clubs who have received grants for the year 2006/07 were also present and received certificates in recognition of their grants. The evening followed with a review of this year’s Surrey Youth Games by Becky Chunisingh, Sport & Physical Activity Officer and certificates were presented to those teams present who had achieved top 3 places by Simon Walker, Club Development Officer, Active Surrey.
Further inspiration was provided by Helene Raynsford, Paralympic Basketball and Rowing athlete who spoke of her training, achievements to date and the importance of clubs and volunteers in the development of sport at all levels. Jonathan Dobson from Disability Challengers was also kindly on hand to address the audience about the work done by the local charity in encouraging and providing opportunities for children with a disability to participate in Play and Sport activities, emphasising the importance of ‘having a go’ and fun, regardless of ability or background.
The evening concluded with the 8 main Awards, The standard was so high this year, that some nominees were chosen to be Highly Commended.
