Final league game of the season and three points today will take City into second place. Ruthvenfield basks in the sunshine and a good home support is in attendance, creating the ideal scenario.
In recognition of his loyal service to the team “the happy joker” Owen is appointed captain for the match and takes up a position in right midfield. City line up in a 4-4-2 formation.
From the kick off it is apparent that City are focused and up for the game. The tackling is strong, passing is crisp and accurate and everybody is moving well both off and on the ball.
Kevin and Michael are linking well on the left and constantly probing into the right corner of the Forfar defence and in the 5th minute, their efforts are rewarded. Michael passes to Kevin who drives deep into the Forfar defence dragging several defenders with him. He then passes a precision pass inside to Michael, who gets into the box and hammers an unstoppable shot high into the net. A quality goal.
Forfar try their best, but Chris and Danny have the middle blocked off and Ed deals competently with anything that comes his way. Owen is having a good game in the centre of midfield, making good tackles and blocks and passing well. Garry is causing the Forfar defence problems with his runs and Stevie Laurie is playing his role really well, covering back with great tackling and making great runs up the right leading to corner after corner.
Despite having all the pressure and chances galore, City have to wait until the 25th minute to increase their lead. Again Kevin makes a determined run right up the left, cuts to the bye line and sends in a peach of a low cross, which Prince hammers home.
City are basically having it all their own way and on the occasions that Forfar threaten, David A is on head to deal with the threat. The half ends with no further scoring . A more than creditable half from City, playing good football and as a unit. The confidence is there for all to see.
One change at half time, Martyn coming on for Prince. City set the pattern right from the restart, with good flowing moves, keeping a high tempo going.
In the 44th minute, Kevin makes a good run down the left and crosses to the right side of the Forfar box, where David M brings the ball under control and hammers home a great shot from 15 yards.
It is basically all City by now and in the 48th minute another good move results in the next goal. Danny takes the ball down the right, swings in a deep cross and Kevin controls and shoots the ball low into the right corner of the net.
City make a triple substitution bringing on Pietr, Jordan and Jamie for Stevie, David M and Owen.
Martyn is having another outstanding game. His ball control is excellent and he is tackling like a demon and throwing his weight about.
In the 62nd minute, Garry torments the Forfar defence again, passes to Kevin, who coolly slams the ball home.
Nick comes on for Ed and takes up a midfield role with City playing three at the back.
In the 65th minute, Martyn rounds of his performance with a superb goal. He challenges for a ball in the left corner of the Forfar defence, wins the ball and drifts past two defenders , gets to the corner of the box and sends a curling shot into the Forfar net.
Owen is re introduced for Danny in an attempt to climax his City career with a goal, without success.
As the game draws to a close, Forfar mount a rare attack. A Forfar forward fires in a good shoot which is net bound until David A makes a great full length diving save to put the ball round the post for a corner.
Overall, a solid workmanlike display from City. Another clean sheet, a testimony to how well the defence have played in the last few weeks. The midfield were well organised and kept the ball flowing all afternoon and Kevin capped off another good display with two well taken goals.
All the substitutes played their part after coming on.
City more than merit their current league position and can now look forward to next season and frontiers new.
Well done to all.
