HISTORY OF THE CLUB |
The club, formed in 1996 by David Spear, entered the County Youth League and knockout cup competitions in thier first season, but it was not until the 1999-00 season that, under the management of Melville Benney, they first achieved success, winnning the County under 16s title. In the 2001-02 season they then reached the under 18s final.
In 2000 with six players progression onto senior football, the opportunity to enter junior football came, with the amalgamation of "Albion" and "Falmouth Post Office". Falmouth Helston League division 3 was the starting point for what has become a very successful club. The Wheatley Cobb Cup win in 2001-02 was followed up by promotion to Division 2 in the next season. In 2004-05 the club won promotion to Division 1. This has been achieved with many of the original players still playing for the club.
Falmouth Albion have linked with Falmouth Rugby club and these links continue to grow. The clubhouse remains our base, as does the pitch for weekly training, and the gym for weight training. Social events between the two clubs are also a regular feature, and we thank the Rugby club for their help and facilities.
With a large influx of youngsters at the beginning of the 2005-06 season, it was necessary to find additional competitions for the club, and with Billy Mclaren added to the management team, we began the season be entering the Service Force West Cornwall Sunday League division 2. This was to give the young players their first taste of mens football and a stepping stone to the first team. With enthusiasm and skill that exceeded all expectations, they won the Division 2 title and the Sporting team of the year award. Many of the players also enjoyed the opportunity to have extended runs in the first team, putting pressure on the senior players for places,
2006-07 saw a seond team elected to the Falmouth-Helston Division 3, giving the lads the chance for regular Saturday football, and to gain further experience in the rough and tumble world of mens football, as they seek to progress throught to the Division 1 side.
With promotion to Division 1 of the Sunday league, a team in the County Youth Under 18 Rathbone Trophy and two teams in the Falmouth-Helston league the future of "Falmouth Albion" seems assured.
2006-07 saw the clubs most succesful season to date. A promotion from Divison 3 to 2 was achieved by the second team along with two cup victories. A club high finish of 4th in Division 1 of the Falmouth Helston league.
The Sunday team won the County Sunday cup, afurther cup final as well as runners up in the league and league cup.
The 2007-08 season was very much a transitional one with many players leaving as the season went on. The unfortunate, but necessary, task of the second team had to be taken, but in the end the 1st team ensured there place in Division 1 and the Sunday side won the cup that eluded them last year.
All hopes are hight that the 2008-09 season will show great progress.
