The U10 Dragons are a completely new team, with currently only one player remaining from the old Farnborough Town Youth FC. In fact he is the only lad who has played competitive football before, so it is going to be an interesting season to say the least.
The new players are very keen and whilst we aim to win as many games as possible, we will be aiming primarily for the boys to enjoy their football whilst improving their skill levels both as individuals and as a team.
It is going to be a challenge for the boys and the management team but it is one we are looking forward to.
Farnborough Youth Under 10 Dragons, managed by Stuart Povey, have become the first Farnborough FC team to win silverware by winning their division of the North East Hants Youth League.
The Dragons started the season with only one player that had played football before, but building on the squad as the season went on, the Dragons began the season with two league defeats but since then they have remained unbeaten, winning thirteen and drawing three of their remaining games to clinch the title.
The Dragons are now preparing for the step up to 11-a-side football next season and will be celebrating the success by leading out the, hopefully also league champions, Farnborough Football Club's first team for the final league game of the season against Uxbridge on 26th April.
Farnborough Youth FC U’10 Dragons have the honour of being the first side representing the club to win silverware. An astonishing first season has seen them secure the Division Five title in the North East Hampshire Football League.
The Dragons were formed in Summer 2007 by Stuart Povey and his son Henry and of the initial nine man squad, only two players had played football before. Expectations were low and September brought along an opening cup defeat and two losses in three league games to leave the Dragons with just one point and a third bottom position in the league. October was a crucial month as the Dragons played three matches against the two sides below them. A first ever victory was achieved against Ropley and followed shortly after with a win against Fleet. With confidence running high the boys sprung a major surprise with a 3-2 away win at fancied Woking and topped the month off with another win against Fleet.
Three new signings at the end of October/early November helped the Dragons push on from a pleasing mid-table position as the unbeaten run continued. Coming from behind four times in a thrilling 5-5 draw at Manor Colts announced the Dragons as serious contenders and they reached the new year tied in fourth place and nine points behind then leaders Woking.
The new year started with the Dragons coming from behind twice to register a last minute win against then bottom side Crookham but it started a nine game winning streak including a crucial home wins against Liphook and Manor Colts when a 2-1 deficit was turned into a 4-2 win. In between, the Dragons had demolished leaders Woking again, with a seven goal thumping.
The beginning of March saw a championship decider as the Dragons travelled to new leaders Hook, looking to avenge an opening day 5-1 loss. A superb 2-0 win sent the Dragons to the top of the table and there they stayed, as there final two opponents decided that they would not be prepared to play for fear of being beaten. The points were rightly awarded and although a disappointing way to secure a title, it completed an unbeaten six month and seventeen game run.
The Dragons would like to take this opportunity thank their sponsor Ryan-Jayberg Ltd for their support, which saw the company supply the boys with both home and away kits for the title winning 2007-08 season.
The Dragons still have a long way to travel but have gone from supposed no-hopers to title winners in one season and the boys should take immense credit for the hard work and dedication they have shown, whilst achieving the clubs first piece of silverware.
