FC DEPORTIVO GALICIA - FOUNDED 1971 |
The roots of Deportivo Galicia go back to 1968 when a group of immigrants from Galicia in North-West Spain formed their own football team in West London. Initially it operated under the banner of Centro Gallego de Londres - a social, cultural and sports club set up to cater for the needs of the rapidly expanding Spanish/Galician community - and was entered into the West Fulham League as Centro Gallego under its first manager, Max Garcia. In the 1971-72 season some members left to form their own team - which they named Deportivo Galicia.
The teams were re-merged in 1975 under the name of Deportivo Galicia and played in the Harlesden Sunday League, enjoying a very successful period under the guidance of, first Paco Cagigao and then Ino Canto, up to 1989-90
In 1990-91 they finished runners up in Division 2 and won the Roundwood 5-a-side competition. 1991-92 they again finished runners up in the First Division and the Premier Cup, winning the Roundwood 5-a-side This same season the reserves, playing in the Harlesden League Division 4 and managed by a young Francis Cagigao (who went on to play for Arsenal Youth, Barcelona Reserves and a number of other professional clubs in England & Spain), won the League's Dwyer Cup.
In 1992-93 the 1st team won the Challenge Cup and Premier Cup, finishing Premier Division and League 5-a-side runners up. By far the Club's best season was 1993-94 when Deportivo won a clean sweep of trophies - Challenge Cup, Premier Cup and Premier Division. Compared to this, winning both the Premier Cup and Premier Division in season 1994-95 was an anti climax!! At the end of 1994-95 the 1st team left the Harlesden League and decided to play their football on Saturdays. By this time, Javier Barrios had joined as assistant to manager Ino Canto. In season 1995-96, the Club's first in the Middlesex County League, Deportivo won the Division 2 title and also gained Intermediate status from the London FA. The Reserve side, now managed by José Rouco & Manuel Mosquera, won the Harrow Sunday Challenge League Division 4. 1996-97 saw Deportivo finish as runners up in Division 1 and gain promotion to the League's top flight. Ino Canto took a well-earned rest as manager and ex-Wembley reserve manager Aitch White was appointed first team manager for the 1997-98 season. The Reserves joined the London Commercial League managed by Abbi Hamaida and Frank Otero. The same season the Club's Youth side was established, playing in the Hayes & District League U-16 section. 1998-99 started badly and Aitch White parted company with the Club in September 1998 with Ino Canto replacing him as manager and Trevor White as his assistant. The Youth side move to the Ealing Youth League, where Sidney Lawrence joined manager Nico Miño as assistant. Abbi and Frank handed over 1st team management to Nico Miño at the start of 2000-01 season. Juan Loureda and Moktar Hamaida joined him on the coaching staff. In the youth side, Sydney Lawrence resigned for personal reasons to be replaced by Ray Brady aided by Ino Canto. Unfortunately due to a shortage of players the team had to abandon the league. The 2001-02 season saw the return of Ino Canto as joint 1st team manager with Moktar Hamaida to the end of the 2003 season, when the team finished mid-table and Ino Canto retired as Manager. The 2003-04 season saw the return of Youssef Sakhraoui assisting Mokhtar Hamaida as team coach until 2005. Mostapha Aizane is our new manager for the new 2005-06 season assisted by Abby, Moktar and Youssef.
