FERRING FC "A HISTORY"
11 May 2009

Ferring football club was formed in 1951,and in those days didn't have any facilities. The players changed in the village hall and a kit was paid for by donations. The team then played in the worthing and district football league They worked their way up the divisions until in 1964 they entered the sussex county league. They stayed there until 1972,where they went into the west sussex league. In 1983 they once again went into the newly formed county division 3. Gaining promotion to county 2, eventually relegated to division 3 again. In 1993 they dropped out into the west sussex league. The next few years wre sporadic culminating in the disbanding of the club. In 2007 a new committee was formed from scratch and not only one team but 2 senior and one youth teams were created. We applied for the worthing and district league, and that's where we are today.

club facilities

When the club was formed in 1951 things were tight financially. Sponsorship wasn't ready available then and the village hall was used for changing. This remained the case until the early 60's. A small building (the pump house) was then used in the corner of the ground, which still remains today. The pitch was originally where rife way is now and had a stream running behind it. The houses surrounding the ground now weren't there then, just fields. An additional wooden hut was added for home changing rooms and refreshments. A mobile toilet block was added in the 70's .A junior team was also formed around this time and floodlights were added to the training area. Having been in and out of the county league since the 60's,the club soon realised that they needed better facilities. This being part of the criteria to re-join. So with much fund-raising,the decision was taken to construct a new clubhouse. People linked with the club all helped to build it to keep the cost down. The actual cost was a hefty sum of £7000 ! Sensing that money was going to be tight to furnish the club, the chairman, john tyler (apt name) went round the village getting people to sponsor the 4000 roof tiles at £1 each. Simple but genius at the same time. In 1983,a week before his teams fa cup final vs manchester utd. The brighton manager officially opened it and a match was played between barry lloyds worthing fc and ferring fc. A few years later a spectator stand was erected. The cost of this was almost double the clubhouse cost ! The building was 25 years old last year and is showing signs of age. Add to this the growth in the playing structure of the club, then a larger facility is required. Arun district council has approved the new design in principal. So it won't be long before everybody is required to get their shovels out !!
