An unbelievable Chronicle and Echo cup final saw the mighty clarets come within a minute of a fantastic cup and league double at Spencer FC.
Up against higher league opposition, Kingsthorpes finest came storming out of the blocks to produce, without question, the finest 45 minutes of football seen in the clubs brief history.
With only 3 minutes gone Lewis found himself one on one with the Wheatsheaf keeper and cooly slotted the ball home between his legs.
Disaster stuck on 10 minutes as super Dekes suffered a terrible ankle injury. Picking the ball up deep within the Wheatsheaf half, Dekes was hit by a miss-timed tackle from behind resulting in a double break and a hold up in play for over an hour as Dekes waited for the ambulance to get him to hospital.
Undeterred by the break in play the Point carried on where they left off, and with Charlie replacing Dekes set about mauling the Wheatsheaf backline.
Mark added the second after a blocked Lewis shot found him unmarked in the Wheatsheaf box and he slotted home with ease.
The goals kept on coming as Bryn added a brace and Lewis his second of the match as FP went into dreamland with a 5-0 lead at half time. Another injury at the end of the half saw Tweedy replace substitute Charlie Whiting as he was the victim of an terrible lunge by the Wheatsheaf left back.
At 5-0 we were all confident of wrapping the game up in the second period.....But then it all went horribly wrong......
Within 20 seconds of the restart the opposition had pulled one back and more importantly gained the belief they could get back into the game. And so it transpired, for the whole of the second period Wheatsheaf dominated and FP looked a shadow of their former selves as we desperately tried to hold onto what we'd built up in the first period.
Our undoing was not being able to deal with crosses as 4 out of the 5 goals conceeded came from balls whipped into the penalty area. Wheatsheaf scored 3 almost identical headers (or two headers and a ball punched into the net!) and a free kick which beat Elliott on the back stick.
When the equaliser came on the stroke of full time, all could see there was only going to be one eventual outcome, and extra time saw a tired and bedraggled First Point put to the sword with the Wheatsheaf boys scoring a further three goals.
Ultimatley it was one game too far for us but as we all know this game was the icing on the cake after a magnificent season that saw us go the entire league season unbeaten.
Well done lads you've done us proud!!!!
