Frampton entertained Keynsham in their last game of the season but more significantly their last ever game as a football team.It is baffling why there is no under 17-s league in Bristol when other counties manage to run such a league. It is a sad fact that players on both sides today may give up the game altogether next season as it will surely be difficult to find available places in under 18 teams in the county.
This was an emotional day for all involved and in particular the players and parents of those players who have been involved with this team since they were 5 and 6 years old.The significance of the occasion was not lost on the management and in particular Spills who started the team all those years ago.It is a testament to the way the team has been run over the years that many players have been there since day one and many since the boys started playing in the "big goals"Spills has said numerous times that the support of the parents is so important in junior football and he would be the first to acknowledge that the parents involved with this team have always given him and the management the support whenever it was needed and without question.
On to the match itself. With Frampton hoping to finish the season unbeaten and with a possibility of maintaining a 100% record there was still much for the champions to play for.It was unfortunate that Frampton had 3 players unavailable for this final game but the 13 players who took part today played their hearts out.The game started off at a frantic pace and on 3 mins a long clearance by George was headed on by Charlie into the path of Keiron who shot narrowly wide. This was a very open game and both sides tried to play football on a hard and bouncy surface.Keynsham are the best side Frampton have faced all season and they were well up for this game.At no point were they overun or remotely out of the game.It was Frampton, however who struck first when winning a corner on 18 mins. The ball was swung into the area but punched clear by the -keeper to the edge of the area where Kieron smashed the ball into the roof of the net with his weaker left foot for his first goal of the season and possibly the goal of the season.Keynsham hit back almost immediately as some neat play down the left resulted in a good cross which found its way to the back post but the Keynsham player blazed over from only 6 yds.Frampton continued to press and both David and Jonny were troubling the Keynsham full backs with some good wing play.Half chances fell for Charlie,Mike and Alex but with only a couple of mins of the half remaining Keynsham almost equalised with a powerful effort from 10 yds which saw George push clear at full stretch.HT 1-0.
Keynsham had the first effort of the second half after only 3 mins when a good effort saw George scambling across his area to tip a goal bound shot away for a corner. This stung Frampton into action and they enjoyed a dominant spell of their own which could have resulted in a penalty as Alex danced his way into the box and appeared to be pushed from behind only for the ref to ignore the penalty claims. On 55 mins Mike hit a great shot on the turn which just went over the bar whilst Keynsham had a great chance to equalise on 58 mins when another good run and cross from the left saw the ball fall to a Keynsham player 6 yds out who could only shoot straight at George. This was real end to end football and great entertainment by two fully committed teams.Frampton were very unlucky on 67 mins when Jonny, after a superb run into the box was blatently pushed, two handedly from behind as he was shaping to shoot. The ref again ignored the appeals for a penalty which many thought was nailed on.As the game wore on it seemed as if Frampton might maintain their superb 100% record but as the game entered the last few seconds of time added on a long ball into the Frampton box saw the defence all ball watching and commit the cardinal sin of letting it bounce.Keysham were first to the loose ball and scored from close range. The whistle went shortly afterwards. To go the whole season unbeaten and only lose a 100% record in time added on in the very last game is a fantastic achievement and in truth Keysham played their part in a good game and deserved a share of the spoils.
Man of the match today goes to Jess who covered every blade of grass.Well done to all the boys. Finally, at the end of the game today the boys were handed 6 bottles of fizz which they liberally sprayed around before spending some time having a beer in the changing room with the management.A huge thank you to Sarah and Scot for their hospitality after the match where both players and parents enjoyed themselves immensely. It was a perfect end to a near perfect season.
