History of Gas Recreation F.C

First formed in 1937, the team were called The Colchester Gas Light And Coke Company F.C then they broke for the war and reformed in 1952,calling themselves Eastern Gas and entering the Colchester and East Essex League.
In 1955 they moved to there own ground in Whitehall Road,Colchester. In 1963 under the management of Gerald Greenleaf,they gained membership to the Essex & Suffolk Border League (Division One). Four years later Colchester Borough Council bought the ground and offered Bromley Road in exchange.The Gas Board then built a Sports Ground there and that is where Gas Recreation have played this present day.the name GasRecreation came from the amalgamation of the Gas Board's team with Recreation Athletic.In 1969 they won promotion to the premier division as champions of Division One.Gas went on to win the Premier Division in 1971/72 and allso finnished as runners up in the Essex Intermediate Cup that year,losing to Pegasus in the Final.The next notable run of success was in 1995/96 under the management of a young and passionate Mick Potter (who is now a legend at the club),winning the Premier Division of the Essex & Suffolk Border League four times in a row and finnishing runners up in 1999/2000.Included in this run of success was a runners up spot in the League Knockout Cup in 1994/95 and winning the same competition for the following three seasons.The ultimate achievement of winning the Essex Intermediate Cup came in 1996/97, beating Danbury Trafford in the final.That same year Gas Recreation achieved a unique treble by winning the Essex Intermediate Cup,the Border League and the League Knockout Cup.In 2000 Mick Potter sadly left to take over as Mamager of Clacton Town.Richard Elmes and Tony Davis took over and in there second year in charge in 2001/2002 they won the Essex Intermediate Cup beating Harold Wood Two-Nil at Heybridge Swifts.In 2004/05 Richard with the help of Ian Phillips won the Premier Division of the Border League by a record 16 points.In 2005-2006 Richard and Ian done the double winning the premier league and the knock out cup
