GLAPWELL FC FESTIVAL OF FOOTBALL UNDER 11's WINNERS (29/04/2008)

Glapwell Gladiators "White" are the proud winners of the under 11's tournament at the Glapwell FC Festival of football. Two teams from Glapwell Gladiators were entered into the tournament. The "Black's" team was Joe Barlow, Campbell Porteous, Tom Flaxman, Chris Butt, Dan Harris and Kyle Turner. The "White's" team was Cameron Lunn, Bradley Galliford, Thomas Rose, Ross Hunter, Callum Revill-Wright and Zak Shaw. Both team's can be proud of the standard of football they played on the night. The White's and Black's were both top of their qualifying group with 2 wins and a draw from their 3 group game's (though the blacks narrowly lost to Holmewood and Heath in a penalty shoot out to decide 1st and 2nd place). Both teams then continued their excellent passing football to ease through their respective quarter final matches. Unfortunately though this set up an all Glapwell semi final (a situation the managers were desperate to avoid!!) The White's were the ones to progress to the final thanks to a couple of Zak Shaw goals but loads of credit must go to the Black's as well for the football they played. The managers were also proud of the level of support they went on to give to the White's in the final - Teamwork at its best. The final itself was against a tough Rainworth Rangers "A" team (the group fixture between the 2 teams earlier in the night ended 0 - 0). Once again chances were few and far between as defences held firm and the match finished in another 0 - 0 draw - bring on the dreaded penalty shoot out!! The 3 Glapwell players to step up for the penalties were Zak, Ross and Callum. Cameron pulled off a fine save from Rainworth's first penalty. Zak then stepped up to convert his kick to give Glapwell a 1 - 0 lead. Rainworth then scored their 2nd kick but a superb penalty from Ross mainatined the advantage. Rainworth scored again to prolong the shoot out but that left Callum to step up and score the winning penalty to great cheers from the Glapwell crowd. Medals and the winners trophy were then presented in the marquee by Mr Colin Hancock (chairman of Glapwell FC) and Mr Kevin Gee (operation's director). All in all a fantastic night was had by all. Thanks to all volunteers who made the night go so smoothly (too many to list but you know who you are!!). Also thanks to the players, supporters and managers of Rainworth Rangers, Blackwell Miners Welfare, Carr Vale Colts and Holmewood and Heath FC for such a great sporting night. Good luck to the Glapwell teams in the Under 12's, 13's and 9's age group in their tournaments over the next 3 nights.
