History

Goonhavern Athletic FC
18 Oct 2007

The early history of Goonhavern Athletic Football Club is a little sketchy, and for a period in the late 1950's the Club went out of existence. It was re-formed in 1962 by amongst others the sadly missed Brian May, who remained Secretary until he passed away in 2003.

The Club spent the next 39 years in Junior football competing in the Mining League. The early 90's saw the Club buy it's own ground, and in conjunction with Perranporth cricket club built a new Clubhouse. On the playing side, the first team won the Mining League Cup and reached the Junior Cup Final, before finishing League runners up in 1995/96.

At the end of that season, at the second time of asking, election to Senior football via the Combination League was granted. After Consolidating under Club Legend Tony Rogers the team gradually developed and in 2003/04 won the League Supplementary Cup beating Hayle 3-0 in the Final. 2004/05 saw the Championship arrive at Reen Manor Parc when the team ran away with the Jollys Combination League title winning it by a clear 16 points.

During that season it was agreed that to continue thr progress made, the next step was to apply to join the South Western League. After a lot of work off the field in that summer, the application was successful, with the new aim of consolidation at this level.

The Club then purchased a second pitch and plans are being drawn up for new changing facilities.

After two difficult years at SWL level the Club won the Leagues most sporting team award for 2006/07, and now are founder members of the new South West Peninsula League and under the new guidence of ex Goalkeeper John Mitchell, who played during the succesful 2003-05 period, will hope to push forward this season and get the team back to winning ways.
